Stanley Attacks
Progressives at
Tammany Hall
Kentucky Senator Term Leg
elation Before Congreis "In
aane anil Pernicious Satur
nalia of Socialism."
New York. July S An attack
on the "imaiie ami ' pernicious
laturnalia of tocialittic lrgitlatinn,"
patted by and being urged upon
congren, wat made yesterday by
Senator Stailey, democrat, Ken
tucky, in an addrett here at a Tam
many hall celebration. Traditional
principle! of the American govern
ment are being abandoned, he de
clared, in the tocalled "nrogrettive"
movement and the people are being
harassed by innumerable government
boards and bureaus.
Criticisms; the "progressive wing"
of the republican party, he said it
was ' the most ingenious inventor ot
new ways and means of invading
the vested rights of the states and
the liberties of the citizen."
Move in Wrong Direction.
"The great trouble with these
vociferous 'progressive!.'" said Sen
ator Stanley, is "that they are for
ever moving in the wrong direction.
Their energy and ingenuity is in the
main confined to the discovery ot
some new method by which a cen
tralized and omnipotent power may
extcjid its inquisitorial and ubiqui
tous authority. Weddings are to be
supervised by hygienic experts, and
martial rights determined by some
eugenic fool.
Babies are to be born by Icderal
2id and1 suckled under federal super
vision.
You cannot milk a cow without
a federal inspector at your heels. The
factory, the null, the counting house,
the office and the home literally
swarm with a horde of petty and
pestiferous representatives of this
paternalistic regime.
And the worst is yet to come, tor
bills are now pending to regulate,
supervise, censor or control the pub
lic press, public utilities, the sale
of securities, the minincr of coal
and minerals, the weaving of cloth,
horse-racing, football, baseball, mov
ing pictures. Sunday amusements,
everything in fact, from the birth of
the babv to the burial of the corpse
and from the operation of a railroad
to the settuig of a hen.
Regulate School Boys.
"Under the terms of the bill to
regulate horse-racing, by censoring
the mails and the press, a lad in col
lege in writing to his mother and
stating the odds on a football game
is liable to a fine of $5,000 or im
prisonment in the penitentiary for
five years.
"In short, ajid in fine, we have
come to the parting of the ways. The
old guard, impotent and discredited,
is left to the mercy of the Nonpar
tisan league and a triumphant so
cialistic organization masquerading
under the emblem of the bull
moose.
Senator Stanley appealed for con
stitutional government ajid a decen
tralization of federal powers, asking
if constitutional limitations were "to
be removed at the whim of omni
potent numbers, maddened by the
'blatant appeals of blind fanatics and
flannel-mouth demagogues."
"Theji have wc passed from de
mocracy to mobocracy," said Senator
Stanley in conclusion, "from govern
ment by laws and courts, and con
gresses, to a government by hysteria
and emotion, from order to chaos."
