an I. tinally, pulled up in the asylum
with a form of inainty called para
noia or paranoid.
The drinker of moonshine drop
as if he had been shot or knocked
on the head. He is not apt to get
the monkeys. If he has hallucina
tions, they relate to vision rather
than sounds. He may see things, but
he rarely hears sound.
Some of them lie in a stupor until
death takes them away. Conscious- j

Dr. Lemchen says that III the 111- I
sti.utioi. with.vvhicl. lie is connected ;
those developing moonshine psycho- t
sin svere old alcoholics in the pre- :
tirohiliilinn davs.
This statement rocs somewhat to
wards confirming the view that pro
hibition will not become effective un
til the old soaks die off; that for them
there is not much hope of permanent
cure and that those learning to drink
now and practicing on moonshine and
home brew are either rather few
' in number or less extreme in their
indulgence than were the men and
women of the old crop.
Dr. Lemchen contends that the
difference bcrwecn the effects of
bonded w hisky and moonshine proves
that it is the drug and not the man
which makes the monkeys.
Different toxins attack different i
nerve cells and different types of
symptoms of poisoning arc produced.
The poisons in bonded alcohol in
toxicate the nerve cells in the spe
cial centers, making the. subject see
things and hear sounds.
Those in moonshine attack the
nerve cells in the associated centers,
causing stupor, loss of memory, loss
of consciousness and impairment of
judgment
"F" was an old drinker until the
country went dry. He drank noth
ing irom time to time until a friend
started him on moonshine two weeks
y before. He finally got drunk, quar
reled with his wife, set hi3 house on
fire and took to the woods.
He states that an hour after drink
ing moonshine he was drunk and had
no recollection of what had happen
ed until he found himself in the asy
lum. "J" got to drinking home-made
whisky. When he landed in the state
insane asylum he was talking queer
ly and seeing black people and black
dogs, but he was hearing no voices
or other sounds.
"R." began drinking moonshine
three weeks before he landed in the
asylum. His reaction was a "par
alyzed" drunk saw many animals,
but heard no voices.
' J. P." drank moonshine for a
week. Remembered almost nothing.
Heard voiees.
"David." Heavy drinker for years.
Drinking moonshine lately. Stuper
ous. Very little memory. Mind badly
disturbed.
She Objects to Bare Knees.
R. W. N. writes: "our answer to
S. P. on bare knees attracted my at
tention. I note you advise children
(girls) between 11 and 12 to bare
their knees in winter. In my own
mind I have never approved of this.
"1. Am I old-fashioned, misin
formed, or what? I have always be
WpvfA children should keco their ex
tremities warm as an aid to good
in nrrlrr tn warm the body? Also,
that a little girl from 11 years on for
a few years needs rather extra care?
"I know of children who wore sox
all winter. I cannot see any ill ef
fects, but can it not be that they are
sturdy children and are not easily
affected?
"2. Woolen stockings have become
very populargwith all ages. Appar- :
