Tho Smith Hughes Agricultural work, which is a new course in tho Red Cloud high school, has started out with a good enrollment. There aic twenty two boys registeied in the work, most of which arc country stud ents. The purpose of tho work is to en courage the country boys to stay on the fariu. Three days a week the boys have class room work and the lcmaining two days are devoted to farm shop work. Tho class room work consists of studying animal husbandry from first class text books, State and Government bulletins and actual judging and study of animals on the farm. Two judging trips huve been made so far, one to Auld'.i farm to ji'dgc shorthorn cattle and one to Starke's to judge dairy cattle. The instiuctor point out to the class the points they should look for in judging then they judge the stock nnd give reasons for their plapings. The cln at pres ent have completed: 1 twelve foot hog trough, 1 chicken f ceded, 1 kitchen rack. 2 scoop end-gates, 1 grindstone frame and I eight by four tool room for the rchool. Also ten bench hooks to be used in the shop. Durinc the year tho instructor plans to have the class make hoc: feeders, liny racks, hog chutes, hog crates and other things which farmers may de sire to have made. Tho class will also do some soldering, harness oiling and repairing. The class will make any farm ar ticle for any one at cost. If you de sire to have any of the articles enu merated made for your farm, see the Smith-Hughes instructor and the class will make it for you at cost. Owing to tho crowded conditions of the Senior Higlf School due to the loss of the Junior HiKh School building the gymnasium has been made into a tem'porary assembly room for the eighth and ninth grades. The dinner room has been .changed into a classroom for the" kindergarten and tables will be placed in the basement hall for the children eating their lunches at the Lincoln building. Forty two pupils enrolled in the Kindergarten this year. This made it necessary to elect Miss Jessie Mc CJellam as assistant. The Bolenius System of reading is being introduced into the Kindergarten course for the first time this year. This system is tho result of the scientific investiga tions of educators in this field of reading. A few points it emphasizes are: motivation of reading exercise, correlation of first grade activities with readintr. tho transmutation of seat work into a profitable reading exercise, the practical sifting of children into good, medium and poor by means of diagonostic exercises and tests, the use of the play spirit, blend ing of thought getting and word mast ery, tho cultivation of proper eye movements. The majority of the pupils passed the first test Friday with a good score.
