Kcllogg's arc never leathery or tough or hard to cat!
Kcllogg's arc always a delight to servo

Use the Wheat Straw
Do Not Burn It
The Southwest bums, or allows to
go to wate, in the neighborhood of
SiO,CU0.00UU0 worth of sttaw every
year; basing its value on the fertiliz
ing elements only, and to say nothing
of the enormous amount of vegetable
matter lost.
Since nearly one third of the virginal
fertility of the soil in this region has
already been lost and since it has been
declining at a ratohoinowhat in excess
of one-half per cent a year, no one in
forested in the future welfare of
thN territory can view such uniiccess
a ry lisies without concern. The ilgures
of conr-e are not strictly accurate. Ac
cuiatc Ilgures cannot be obtained; but
if anyone doubts that the fcitility bf
the South west is being lot, at a lapid

easy nor a stmplo matter -o restore the
stiaw and, at the same time, secure
enough better wheat to pay for the
extra labor. The straw may even re
sult in lower yields, if not judiciously
appl'cd. Where combine harvester
tl rjshors are used this problem is an
tomatioly solved iu perhaps' the bot
poslble woy.
Noc'oibttlo best practice, where a
considerable qi onllty of straw is to t e
disposed of, is to me as much as pos
sible for feed and bedding and see to
it that all the manure is app led to the
land. Probably the second best meth
od Is to apply it as a thin top dioising

Another and probably the most gen
erally practical way is to apply the
straw as a top dressing in the wintor.
It may be applied in this way to land
intended for spring crops, or as a top
dressing on growing wheat. Iu either
case the application should be a light
one; 1 to 1 fi tons per acre. Straw ap
plied in this way groatly retards soil

spring aud result in decreased yields.
In Kansn-t, it has been estimated
that the wheat straw stacks that
are scattered and allowed to stand
from year to yoar on wheat farms cov
er fully two acres, ou an average, on
ench farm. This acreage coverad with
straw stack represents loit use of
thousands ot acres of good wheat land,
but it does uot, equal the loss in fer
ftlllty represented if the stacks are
burned. As far as possible, wheat
straw should be stacked in corrals or
feed lots, where tho feeding and tramp
ing ot the livestock will assist in the
rotting. Straw that cannot be spread
over the fields at once or cannot be
handled iu connection with feeding
should be stacked ou waste land and
iu places whore it cun remain uutil
