"It's a terrible situation," Bnld Doc
tor Pratt.
'"It is," admitted bis wife, sadly.
"And I don't know how we can remedy
It. If only dear iniimuia were not
quite so dictatorial !"
"One would think," ruminated the
physician, "Unit she was the doctor
and I tho otllce boy. If she doesn't
like a patient's looks, or manners, or
expression, she refuses him admit
tance; says I'm out, or sick, or dead;
anything to make It certain that ho
will never call again. And Shepurd,
across the street, only too anxious as
he Is, to grab my practice!"
"But what can we do?" walled the
doctor's pretty wife. "Wo can't deny
her a home, can we? Poor mamma 1"
"Poor me! Poor you! Poor chil
dren ! But cheer up, little one, I have
something In view."
"Something in view?" repeated Mrs.
Pratt, uneasily.
"Don't worry. It's not murder or
banishment I'm contemplating for your
dear mother. What I had In mind
was matrimony."
Mrs. Pratt, who was not wholly
without humor, smiled. "Who Is It?"
"Alwyn Pratt, my uncle. Since his
wife died, a year ago, he's been very
unhappy for lack of some one to scrap
with. I'm in hopes that your mother"
Mrs. Tratt laughed in spite of her
Belf. "Edwin, that's not nice of you.
Mother will never marry least of all
n member of your family. You know
her."
"I know her. Therefore I'm bring
ing Uncle Alwyn to dinner tonight.
Good-by, dear. Some of the patients
your mother couldn't drive away are
waiting for me to see them."
Mrs. Colwell, Doctor Pratt's mother-in-law,
dressed for dinner that eve
ning with the satlstled air of one
whose time has tieen well spent, as,
Indeed, It had been.
"Mother, dear," said Mrs. Pratt, tim
idly breaking In on Mrs. Colwell's
pleasing reflections, "I hope you don't
mind If wt If we have company to
night?" "Company?" Mrs. Colwell stared In
credulously. "Company, and I not
know It? Who is coming?"
"Edwin's uncle, Mr. Alwyn Pratt a
very nice old gent Ionian, Indeed."
The door hell rang sharply. The
dinner guest had arrived.
Mr. Alwyn Pratt was a handsome
old gentleman, with white hair, and
sharp, black eyes that twinkled mys
torlously ns he shook hands with his
nephew's mother-in-law. Ills eyes con
tinued to twinkle, In spite of the glare
with which. Mrs. Colwell favored him.
The dinner was a nervous affair.
"1 would like." said the uncle, "a lit
tle more pudding. It your grnelous
mother would he so kind."
Mrs. Colwell's outraged feelings
could be repressed no longer.
"I am curious," said she, "ns to what
a member of the Pratt fumlly knows
about manners, gracious or otherwise."
"Hm!" said Mr. Pratt, with a
chuckle. "Not much, maybe. Just
enough to know when they are miss
ing. .Sorry you don't like the Pratts,
ma'am. Our people don't show their
feelings so plainly. Wo proved it when
my nephew hero married your daugh
ter. Not that we were disappointed In
the little lady, bless her. She's every
thing that could be desired. But we
disapproved of of her connections."
, "Her connections 1" Mrs. Colwell
gasped. She was the only living rela
tive of her daughter. "Her connec
tions! Why, I considered It the disap
pointment of my life when my daugh
ter married Doctor Pratt! Don't you
boast about your family! One of them
Is a rascally barber!"
"Oh, niudaiiie!" protested I'nele Al
wyn. "Don't say that I Joe's not. a
rascally barber. A more painstaking
nnd affectionate man I never saw. He's
shaved nie for years, and I know. The
soul of Imiior. .loc K I'm not ashamed
of hint. Ii illicit be a good deal worse.
Tor example, ho might have been a
horse thief!"
Mrs. Colwell turned a deep purple.
Her (laughter rose, hastily, hut Doctor
Pratt restrained her.
"Don't worry. Everything Is going
tine," he whispered.
Mrs. Colwell's furious voice tilled
the room. "It Isn't true that my grand
father stole a horse. He had bought
the horse, and "
"Dear lady," said old Alwyn, bland
ly, "did I say your grandfather stole a
horse? Far be It from me to make so
vulgar a statement. I didn't know your
grandfather. I didn't even know the
liorse. Moreover "
"You you at least you can't deny
that your uncle was one of the worst
gamblers In the city. He "
Doctor Pratt seized his wife's hand
and drew her from the room.
"The courtship Is In full swing," he
said.
Old Mr. Pratt spent a delightful eve
ning, and called again the following
week. Nor, to her daughter's surprise,
did Mrs. Colwell object to his coming.
In three months they were married.
The bride explained, to the satisfac
tion of all.
'Tie never stays long enough for me
to show m where ho Is wrong. Under
ordinary circumstances I wouldn't
think of marrying him. One of thnt

THE RIGHT THING
at the
RIGHT TIME
By MARY MARSHALL DUFFEE
,A MAN'S NAME
A 11USINKSS man said the other
day that It was a serious error
for a would-be business man, espe
cially a salesmnn, to forget the nama
of the unimportant little Mr. Nobody-In-Particular
from Not-Much-of-Any-where
with whom he was trying to do
business. No man likes to have you
forget his name. If the man Is Im
portant and Is used to receiving at
tentions then he doesn't notice your
overMght so much, hut the small man
who gets little notice In the world
feels especially sensitive about It and
Is especially gratllled when you go
out "of your way to remember him.
Often, however, when you are Intro,
duce'd'to strangers It Is physically Im
possible to get their names. This Is
partly due to the fact that we Amer
leans are prone to speak Indistinctly.
Now the best thing to do when you
hnvenot heard a man's name distinct
ly Is to make amends for this falluro
within a short time. Ask some ono
who knows the man what his name fs.
Better .still go to the man In ipiestldn
and .say: "I didn't quite understand
your name. Will joii set mo right?"
It Is better to do this than lo wait un
til you have to Introduce the stranger
to some newcomers and then to huvo
to poi'isc in making your Introductions
to iihI the newcomer what his name
Is mo way.
A salesman who reiaeiiiliers- custom
ers' names Is always an asset. And
don't believe there Is any .special
knack about It. It .simply requires a
little attention, .lust think about the
name the first time you hear It.
Think about the name In association
with some certain feature of the ono
to whom It belongs. A celebrated de
tective who has a phenomenal rec
ord for remembering faces and In tell
ing them under different disguises
makes a point to remember some one
distinctive, unusual characteristic. If
you wish to remember names try as
sociating tho name with some ono
strong characteristic' of tho face. It
Is n matter of habit more than any
thing else and you will find that It
will make you popular and may,
eventually lead to strlklug success.
