Certain Set of Muscles, Affected by the
Cold, Get to Work, Irrespective
of Will. I
The little muscles which close tho
Jnw are acted upon by the cold In such
a way that they pull the Juw up and
then let It fall by Its own weight.
This, repented tininy times, causes
the teeth to click together nud produco
what we know as "chattering."
We think of It in connection with
our teeth because It is the teeth which
make the sound, hut the cause lies In
the muscles which we use In chewing
or In opening our mouth when w
speak.
The chattering occurs in spite of tho
will or brain. We hnvo little control
over it, and can stop It only by clench
lng the teeth. It Is really a mild vie
rlely' of 'spasm caused by tho cold,
which nets on the Juw muscles in much
the same way that some poisons pro
duce muscular spasms which cannot
be controlled.
