losing game. No one can blame any
one for quitting a losing business, but
it is too bad for the producers, the
consumers and the soil of our Nation
that livestock lias not been returning
a uniform profit.
When men are going into and com
ing out of n business in an erratic
manner that business is certain to
suffer the consequences. Supply rises
and falls, bringing a falling matket,
as supply increases, and increasing
prices, as supply low-era. Heavy pro
ducers may find themselves bankrupt
overnight tinder such erratic condi
ditions or they may find themselves
cr dited with a small fortune accumu
lated in as short a time. It makes a
nasty gamble of what should be a
sound, stable business, and it makes
or breaks men by the thousnnds.
Tho great need of the present is an
assured, profitable price for all meat
animals fitted for the market. If the
farmer could be assured a reasonable
profit for cattle and hogs ho would go
ahead with production. II is soil would
increase in productiveness as his herd
increased, for gi cater crops follow the
manure spreader as surely as day fol
lows night. With tho memory of tho
past still fresh in mind; of promises
of profits made and broken; or prof
iteers reaping tho reward rightly be
longing to the producer, is it any won
der that pastures and corrals arc bare
