For a Time It Had Scrgt. Hayes Tied
Up, But He Came Out a
Lieutenant.
Oneo upon a time there was a man
who "llreil" Ills employees that ho might
have tho pleasure of hiring them over
again. That would seem to be some
what the way with the murine corps.
It "Hies" Its men that the government
may do them special honor.
Scrut. Kdiritr Hayes, a red-blooded
patriot of the marine corps, overheard
an iisperMon upon the uniform ot his
service. Sergeant Hayes promptly hit
the speaker lu the no-o. The murine
corps sat upon his casts lu solemn
court-inartial, and after much dellber-
I atlon dismissed Sergeant Hayes from
the service, thus creating civil disabil
ities. The case later was reviewed by
the president, who pardoned Hayes and
restored him to citizenship. Hayes
bus now been restored to the service
and created a llrst lieutenant, an act
of congress having empowered the pres
ident to make the appointment.
It Is a roundabout way of doing a
mail honor. And It shows something
wrong with the system. Wo wonder
what the illgnllled gentlemen of tho
court-inurtlitl would have done If It had
been proved that Sergeant Hayes, now
Lieutenant. Hayes, having overheard
mi aspersion upon his honorable serv
ice, had condoned It by Inaction. Cin

I was very glad to learn of tho or
ganization of a Preliminary Commlt-
teo in Nebraska, having for its ob
ject the nomination of Senator John
son of California as a Republican
candidate for president of the United
States.
The public record of Senator John
son is an open book. From tho begin
ning, when ho engaged almost single
handed in California, to rid that stale
of railroad control, he 'has stood as
one ot tlie leaders lor iiuk -'
thought and progressive government.
My pergonal acquaintance with him
has only increased the admiration
Mmi I liiul formed in reading about
his work in California. His nomina
tion will bo opposed by those inter

way of progress in government, but
in my judgment tho great patriotic,

enthusiastic in his behalf.

purpose of your organization and will
