BETTER SIRES BETTER STdtfK
A few dairymen have cowh prodac. '
ing more than 20,000 pounds of milk
u year an animal, as compared with
the great rank and file of duiry ani
mals which yield an average of less
than 4,000 pounds a year not two
thirds of the average production in
Denmark. In the same way, beef an
imnls that produce premier porter
house steaks and filet of beef of tho
finest, arc greatly outnumbered by
the lur.drcds of thousands of steers
which yield less meat per animal and
of poor quality. Millions of cattle
have been raised and converted into
meat at a very small profit to their
growers, not because they were unfit
or because they did not receive a pro
per ration, but because they were of
poor breeding; use better blood and
lots of it and not only will- tho meat
rchourccs of America be replete with
ample supplies, but the quality of tho
meat will tickle the palate of the con
sumer to the extent tbat he will como
back for more and thus further pop
ularize animal husbandry pursuits.
The underlying need for improve
ment of livestock in tho United states
is to increase efficiency in production
of meats and other live stock pro
ducts, including dairy and poultry
commodities. Economical production
is one of the surest and best means of
maintaining domestic trade and of
meeting foregoing competition. Suc
cess in both of these fields is nccqs
sary to support a livestock industry
of sufficient size to meet the future'
food needs of the county, and through
animal fertilizer and other by-products,
develop a well balanced agricul
ture. The value of live stock depends
largely on good care, housing, feed
ing and disease control as well as on
breeding. Good breeding, however,
determines the fundamental capacity
of an animal to be profitable to its
owner. Accordingly, tho replacement'
of scrub sires by good purcbreds, Is
the fundamental basis for improve
ment. Although the use of good fe
males is likewise important, good
sires bring results more qutcklv and
economically in most cases.
Purebred Sires Rapidly Improve
Herds
Considerable confusion is prevalent
in the minds of many farmers appar
ently concerning the exact meaning
of the words purebred, thoroughbred,
full bred, cross bred, grade, scrub,
and mongrel, All these terms are
fully cxpl uncd in the printed matter
being prepared for distribution to per
sons interested in the campaign.
Once the use of purebred sires be
comes general throughout the coun
try, ll o process of grading up will ie

erstwhile scrub stock may be up
graded to such an extent that for the
production of meat and other animal
products the members of such herds
are practically as useful as purcbreds.
The chief difference between a high
grade animal and a purebred is in the
value for breeding. Only the latter
can be used in producing pure bred
breeding stock. Furthermore it is only
pure bred or full blood animals which

The betterment of the Nation's
livestock is a topic which has been
preached for years from public plat
forms from which agricultural infor
mation has been disseminated. The
agricultural press has nlso spread
the doctrine of better blood and the
use of superior sires. Agricultural
