SENIOR AND ADULT TOIMC-Unsls
and benefits of Christian fellowship.
The Kplstlo to tho Phlllpplnns fur
nishes us with n bountiful example of
fellowship between Paul and tho
church at riilllppl. This church on
several occasions sent Paul money for
his support. The particular ministry
of this sort at the hnnds of Hpnphro
dltus while Paul was a prisoner nt
Home was the occasion for this epis
tle. Ills words of thanksgiving for
this gift Isjlie text of our lesson.
I. Paul' Expression of Appreciation
(4:10).
The Phlllpplnns hail on several occa
sions expressed their sympathy nnd
love for Paul by their gifts, but con
siderable time had elapsed since any
gifts had reached him. When their
care for him again flourished he was
mnde to greatly rejoice. He recognized
that the Lord wns ministering to him
through these people, therefore ho re
joiced In the Lord. This was a very
tactful way of saying "I thank you."
This gift wns glndly received because
he was In need and nlso because It as
sured him that his old friends still
loved htm.
II. Paul's Manly Independence (vv.
11-13).
Though sincerely appreciating the
gift, lie would have them know :
1. Ho was Independent of circum
stances (v. 11). Through discipline of
the Lord he had learned to be content
with his lot. He -knew that nil things
work together for good (Rom. 8:28).
so whatever he was experiencing at
the moment wns from the hand of tho
loving Father. Happy, Indeed, is tho
man who bus learned (his secret. Paul
was willing to tnke poverty or pros
perity, whatever came.
2. Willing to tnke what God sent (v
12). If It bo prosperity, he would re
joice and praise God; If It be adver
sity, he would patiently suffer It,
knowing that It was pennltted by the
Heavenly Father because It wns need
ful for his best Interests. This Is a
fine example of self-mastery. If a
thing desired wns not forthcoming he
would not allow his heart to desire It.
3. His faith was In Christ (v. 13).
The soul-poise which Paul possessed
was not of himself, but because Christ
Indwelt him. Such composure Is
only possible ns Christ lives In and be
comes the dynamic of one's life. When
the life Is thus surcharged with the
energy of Christ, he Is absolutely Inde
pendent of circumstances. Such polso
Is possible to all who will unreserved
ly yield themselves to God.
III. The Fellowship of Paul and the
Phlllpplan Saints (vv. 14-19).
1. The gift of this church to Paul Is
an outstanding example of Christian
sympathy (vv. 14-10). No other
church had remembered Paul nt all In
his grcnt need, but this one rendered
pecuniary aid again and again, afford
ing a fine example of mutual love be
tween a minister nnd the people sup
porting him.
2. Tho gift n splrltunl blessing to tho
church (v. 17). Paul was pleased with
their gift not primarily for Its value to
him, but because of the blessing which
the people derived from giving It It
wns fruit which abounded to their ac
count. "It Is more blessed to give
than -to receive" (Acts 20:3T).
" 8. Their gift wns an acceptable act
of worship "nn odor of a sweot smell,
well-pleasing to God" (v. 18). Truo
Christian giving Is an act of worship
to God.
4. Their gift would be rewarded by
tho Heavenly Father (v. 10). True
Christian giving Is not on the basis of
prudence, but by faith In the living
God who will make recompense ac
cording to his riches in glory by Christ
Jesus.

SET HIM THINKING
Squire's Placard Caused Un
pleasant Surmise.
Of Course Mr. Ccrr Knew That Under
No Circumstances Could Ho Bo
Considered a Bore, but, Well,
There It Was.
Isnnc Prntt wns making a friendly
call In Squire Mnrr's olllcc. Conversa
tion lagged, nnd he let his eyes roam
round the room.
"Hello 1" he snld. "I sec you've got
n new placard on tho wall. 'This Is
my busy day.' A gentle hint to bores,
I suppose."
"Well, It wns mennt to be," said tho
squire with n grim laugh. "I like to
have my friends drop In occasionally,"
h explained, "even if they Imvo no,
speclnl business. Hut some of them
come a little too often and stay alto
gether too long. They may not hnvo
anything more Important to do nt tho
time than to tnlk politics or spin yams.
But It often happens that I have; and
In that case, putting my time against
theirs Isn't nn even swap. Tho fact Is,
tho average man Is so interesting to
himself that ho can't Imagine that ho
may be n bore to other people."
"Puts me in mind of nn experience
I once had trying to get rid of n bore,"
said Isaac, as he settled himself com
fortnhly In his chnlr. "I was doing
quite a little business one winter build
ing pleasure boats to order, and a
neighbor of mine, nn oldish man with
some means nnd nothing to do, used
to come to my shop every day nnd
tonst himself by the fire nnd talk I
talk! talk I from morning till night. It
wns rather fussy work I wns doing,
and he almost drove me wild telling
old stories nnd offering advice; but I
remembered my manners and never
let on to him that I wasn't pleasetl
with his company. By the tlmu I'd get
home m night, though, my good na
ture would be pretty much gone.
"Why don't you fry being a llttlo
cool to him nnd see If he won't, take
the hint?' my wlfo would say; and
finally I thought I'd carry out that
idea, although not exactly In the way
she meant.
"So the next day when I got to the
shop I went right to work on my boat,
without the usual preliminaries. It
was a below-zero morning, and when
Mr. Judklns came In he mndo a be
line for the stove.
"'Why, says he, nil shivering, 'you
haven't got n mite of fire t'
" 'No,' says I, 'my work Is sort of
bothersome, and I thought mebbe my
head would be clearer In a cold room.'
"He tried to argue me out of thnt
notion, but I was kind of obstinate;
and after shivering round a spell he
went off, and I had the shop to myself
for the balance of the dny. I didn't
get on so much faster with my work,
though, what with having to stop to
blow on my fingers every few min
utes; and ns for my head being clear
er, It didn't turn out thnt way In the
end. When I got home thnt night I
realized that I had a hard cold on mo,
and I didn't sec the shop again for
three weeks.
"Thnt would have been quite n price
to pny even if I hnd got shed of Mr.
Judklns, but, you see, I hadn't. When
he found I wns laid up, he considered
It his duty to visit the sick, nnd he
would stay with mo for hours. Ho even
sat up with me a couple of nights
when I was worst off, and I must own
thnt ho was a grand good hnnd in sick
ness. When I did get so thnt I could
go to the shop, he went on abend nnd
built up a rousing hot fire, so thnt wo
could both bo comfortable. He was
certainly a klnd-henrted person. I
guess bores generally are; and that Is
one reason why wo find It so plaguy
hard to get rid of them. Isn't tbnt so,
squire?"
"How's thnt? Oh, yes, 1 suppose sol'
answered tho squire, looking up from
his writing.
Some time later Isnnc leisurely took
his leave. When hnlfwny home, he
halted nbruptly, confronted by an en
tirely new thought. '
"By Jingo 1" he snld to himself. "You
don't suppose tho squire mennt that
placard partly for me, do you?"

If You Need a Medicine
You Should Have the Best
Hare you ever stopped to reason why
it is that so many products that are ex
tensively advertised, all at onco drop out
of sight and are soon forgotten ? The
reason is plain the article did not fulfill
the promises of the manufacturer. This
applies more particularly to a medicine.
A medicinal preparation that has real
curative value almost sells itself, as like
an endless chain system the remedy is
recommended by those who have been
benefited, to those who are in need of it.
A promineat druggist says "Take for
example Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, a
preparation I have sold for many years
and never hesitate to recommend, for in
almost every case it shows excellent re
sults, as many of my customers testify.
No other kidney remedy has so large a
sale."
According to sworn statements and
verified testimony of thousands who have
used the preparation, the success of Dr.
Kilmer's Swamp-Root is due to the fact,
so many people claim, that it fulfills al
most every wish in overcoming kidney,
liver aad bladder ailments; corrects uri
nary troubles and neutralizes the urio
acid which causes rheumatism.
