THE FIRE-BOX. within the air-box. is made, not in
pieces, riveted or cemented together by the usual methods
but of steel plates welded together by special welding
machinery, into one piece of continuous metal, making
leakage absolutely and permanctly impossible. The steel
is three-sixteenths inch thick, being much heavier than
the ordinary furnace steel.
THE FUEL SPACE occupies the middle of the fire-box
above the ash-box. It is long and narrow, and is inclosed
by heavy fire brick linings. The fire door opening is 17
inches wide and and 11 inches wide
in the clear. It is located so as to
give the best possible access to the
fuel and grates. In the top, rear and

: over ordinary furnaces with deep
round fuel pots, and circular or hidden flue spaces.
THE "FAR QUAR" is designed upon the principle of
slow combustion. H igh temperature jn the fuel bed is
avoided. The result is that the gas is evolved slowly and
the fuel substance retained, preventing waste.
FREEDOM FROM CLINKERS is an incidental advan
tage of this slow-coking fire. They are not found in the
