masting- ntan'a deepest need
This Is ono of tho most dramatic,
spectacular Incidents recorded In the
lllhlc. It Is n good illustration fot
Sunday school teachers on how to tell
a story by imagining whnt ono would
naturally do. Wo ought to havo our
scholars see with their Imagination,
tho story of this lesson as though they
wcro oyc-wltncsscs of tho whole scene,
Tho time was about May or Juno A. D.
128, tho second year of Jesus' ministry,
n few weeks following tho last lesson,
during which time ho hnd been preach
ing nnd healing In tho surrounding
country.
I. Introduction. Jesuscould testify
In a homo ns well ns beforo tho multl-,
tudes. Indeed It wns after having tes
tified In tho homo (v. 1.) thnt tho
crowds gathered nhout tho doorway,
for It wns not known thnt ho was there,
until somo days after ho hnd been In
tho house. Luko tells us that tho
crowds which cume, emtio not only
from Galileo but Judcn and even Je
rusalem. Jesus did his work so well
In tho homo that wherever ho wns, tho
world wore n path to his doorway. No
tice verso two; when tho crowd gath
ered about, ho spoko unto them "the
word." In this wo boo n parable.
Many a successful mnn, when ho bo
comes popular, forgets to preach tho
pure Gospel, tho Word of Life. j
II. An Impelling Need (vv. 0:4) J
This man who had paralysis, 1. o., dla-j
nblcd on onu side, was not only de-
prlved of his sensation but his power,
of motion. Ah to tho cnuso of his diffi
culty, his previous character of life,'
thcro Is no word of suggestion. Wo sco
abundant cvldenco today, however, to
know tbnt many such enscs nro tho
results of our own debaucheries and
ono would gather from tho courso
which Jesus pursued with this mnn
that perhaps his caso wns llkowlso tho
result of his early Bin. Tho teacher
might well read In this connection
Luke 10:11-10. Of courso, this man
may not havo been a prodigal son.
Nevertheless, ho had ns much Buffer
ing ns though ho had been and as far
as ho himself was concerned, ho was
helpless, n plcturo of nil sinners. lie,
however, 'had friends, very enterpris
ing ones. And so putting him upon th
doublo quilt or coverlet, which could hi
rolled together In a bundlo of moderate
size, they carried him Into tho pres
ence of tho master.
III. Jesus Forgives and Defends Hli
Rights (vv. 5:12). Tho crowd was so
great about tho houso thnt "they could
not como nigh unto htm for tho press."
They were not, however, discouraged
but leaving tho crowd, they went up
tho usual outsldo stairs, bearing the
sick man with them unto tho roof
which "they uncovered" literally they
dug through tho flat roof made of
brandies and twigs and covered with
earth, and which could bo as easily re
paired. Travelers In eastern countries
have often seen a Blmllar act perform
ed even in this day. They then let
down the bed or mattress by tho four
corners. The roof was so low that
no cords wcro needed nnd thoso below
received the man from tho hands ot
tho four upon tho roof and placed him
In front of Jesus. Jesus commends
"their deed" as Indicated In all threo
of tho Gospel records. Not nlono phys
ical obstacles had to be overcome, but
tho nttitudo of tho scribes (v. 7). Was
It right, was It honest to break through
tho roof of a man's house? Would
they mako It good? Wns tho owner
glad to havo had It dono? Jesus did
not hesltato or speculate over such
questions, but goes at onco to tho lssuo
and Bald to tho man sick of tho palsy,
"Son, bo of good cheer, thy sins bo
(nre) forgiven thee." Seo Matthew's
and Mark's account. "Son," Is a word
of endearment; tho word "bo" Is not
as strong in the old form as tho word
"aro" forgiven. Jesus went at onco
to tho unhealed wound In tho soul, tho
senso of unforglvcn sin. Forgiveness
Is not of' tho judgo who sentences "not
guilty," but a father who welcomes
and restores one to sonshlp. It Is res
toration to life. Tho Ulblo story of
tho prodigal son and that scene pic
tured In tho Boventh chapter of Luke,
tho feast whero Jesus dealt with a
woman of tho city, who ministers unto
him, are good Illustrations of tho mas
ter's nttitudo of mind on this occasion.
The scribes charged blasphemy which
s to slander God and speak treason
against him. Blasphemy Is practical
ly uttered treason. Ho perceived theli
Inmost thoughts and answered them
(v. 0). To forglvo Bin, or to com-
j inund tho mnn to rlso wcro both dl
vino acts; ho could do either; ho prov
cd ono by tho uso of tho other, nil
command to tho .young man to takt
up his bed was u test to bo proved bj
tho man's faith. Thnt tho euro wui
complete wo know, for ho Immediate'
ly ttroso. To "nrlso" wns a physical
Impossibility; to "tuko up his bed"
permitted no rclapsa.
