Fourth of July Celebration was 'Fittingly Observed Tlio Nation's gieutest day July I Fourth -was fittingly observed in our city yesterday. The longexpeotedand uiiieh ptedieted iiiln failed to appear and people came to tliu city from fur and near. It is estimated that 15,000 people weio hero and over 1000 autos. The bijr program was openod with a concert by the Lebouou Military Hand at ten. thirty. The balance of the morning was devotou to sports of vari ous kinds. The tug of war between Kansas and Nebraska proved very in teresting with the result that Kansas carried away the honors and the pulse of gold. The foot races were all pulled of as per schedule, causing consider able excitement, and amusement for the people. The big number on the program was the Historical Pageant and auto painde. Messrs. W. O Hamilton and Fred Mnurer followed by the Lebanon Hand lead tho parade. They were fid lowed by the Chamber of Commerce,' in uniform, speakers of the day were: Hon. Heiuard McNcny and Hon. An drew M. Morrlssoy. Then came the various divisions representing the pio gress of the state and nation, from the time of the landing of the Pilgrims to the present day, The various groups under the supervision of their leaders Illustrated in a very line manner the points of history they represented. A large number of antes were in cluded in the parade, the ears ot It. P. Weesner & Co., Hamilton k, Cather, Itoy Sattley and the lied Cioss were very beautifully decorated. The parade came to a halt at the Washington school park where the balance of the program was leudeied, A large crowd assembled there to hear the vailous numbers including the opening address by Hon. It. K. Mo Neny, musical selections by the Lebnn on and Ked Cloud bands, the reading of Lincoln's Gettysburg speech by Win. McOilde, vocal selection by the grand chorus and the stirring address by Hon. A. Tho concert in tlio evening as well as the many selections lender ed by the Lebanon baud during the day were very fine. Much credit is duo the musicians and their leader, Mr Fred Miller, for the fine musical pro gram they rendered while in our city Tho local band also favored tho citizens and visitors with a very flue class of of music during tho day and evening and when it comes to distributing the bouquets tile Benjamin Stock Company band is deserviug of their share of the glory. The musical part of the program certainly received careful attentiou. Judson, Director for Nebraska American Ked Cross, has formally recognized tlio association in this city and lias named it tlio Webster County Chapter. This arrangement Is made to lessen the olllce work at the state headqiiartois. Iu as much as the Red Cross is or ganized solely for the alleviation of dlstt ess it appeals to every creed and party tin a out the world Webster county has been very slow In getting organized but the entlio county Is awake and nnxious to do Its shaie iu this relief work. Council Proceedings Mayor Damerell called the Council together in regular session in the Council Chambers last night with all members present. The minutes of the meetings of June 6 nnd 29th were read and approved and the report of S. R. Florance read and placed on file. Application nnd bond of E. S. Garber for electric light wiring license was approved and granted. Bond of Abel Construction Company approved by the engineers and ordered filed. Estimate of the engineers on sew erage for the month of June recom mending the payment of $2797.44 approved. Council decided to purchase one acre of land of Mrs. Alice llosmcr, for $1500, adjoiningfhe city's present site at the power house. Superintendent Zeigler"vas in strtcted to negotiate with the man ufacturing firm, from which the city purchased tlio oil wagon, as regards trading the same in on a larger wagon. Tho lowest figures wcro that of the Able Construction Co, of Lincoln, who were awarded tlio contract at S?.53 per square yard for class C brick. Their llguros were two cents lower per 6quaro yard below the eslmatod cost. Work will bo begun on the paving the Inst of this week as the company expect to have their equipment here ready for business today. Tho con tract will be completed on or before September 15th. Unless some complications should arise iu the meantime Red Cloud's business district will present an ap pearauco of considerable activity with in tho next ten days.
