This will bo given on tho '2nd of February the Seniors entertaining tho Juniors. All students feel much relieved by the fact that the 8.".0 examinations giv en Thursday and Friday of last week aro over. Nearly all are of the bollef that this is an excellent opportunity for turning over a now leaf in school work. The faculty sincerely hope this will be carried out. Tho High School Athletics arc on tho up grade. The Newhouse bulding has been rented for the Basket Hall team and a great deal of intorest is being shown thus far. It is believed that the ilrst threo games Alma, Frank lin Academy and Nelson College arc to bo played away from home, but with return games later In tho season. On Monday of this week the High School students were royally entertain ed by Dr. J. A. Lcavitt, who is a great and good benefactor of the general public, lie belongs to the rckuown '"Society for tho Friendless," whoso work is befriending jailbirds, or in milder words, men and women who have been detained behind the iron bars and stone walls, justly or unjusf ly, by Uncle Sam. lie used for his subject, his motto, "Others", and from It delivered a very amusing, interesting and uplifting ad dress. Ho told of his experiences with and for such poople, which made .all sit up and take notice. He took the students back to the earlier causes, for imprisonment other than povorty or drink, back to the cradle in the home. Ho stated that he believed that should a baby cry In tho night until it's par' cut came and turned on the light or fed it, that this was tho beginning of small victories of the child over the parent, which quickly enlarged and then came, eventually, petty victories over the government and so on until they landed behind tho bars. The work of this "Society for the Friendless" Is not only "cure" but the greater part "prevention". During the course of his address ho mentioned many ways of prevention! and nt the end of forty minutes of good sound advise, with a good wish for all, he had completed his talk. Everyone enjoyed him and felt they were hotter for having heard a man such as Dr. Leavltt. The Democratic Editorial Banquet The banquet given by tho Democratic IMIlorial Association, nt the Lludcll hotel, Lincoln, January llth, was at tended by about 100 guests and was a most pronounced r.uceess in every way. Credit for this is due in great measure to President John M. Tanner, who act ed as tuustmaster, E. A. Walrath, secretary, as well as other members of the committee on arrangements. John W. Cutrlght, editor of tho Lincoln Daily Star is tho champion booster, however, having disposed of 101 tickets, Tills banquet served as a sort of pre liminary stutc convention for bringing nut candidates for state ollicc. An nouncements were made of the candi dacy of Charles W. Pool for ronotnl nation as secretary of state; Wm. II. Smith for auditor; Geo. E. Hall for treasurer; Willis B. Reed for attorney general; W. S. Rldgell, Jack Orace, and Victor Wilson for railway com missioner; Harry Adams for treasurer; and a number of other aspirants made speeches but did not make formal an nouncement of their intention to tile. President Wilson's uamc was alwayn loudly applauded, but there was diyls ion of opinion on his preparedness pro gram, tormer united states senator Wm. V. Allen and Arthur Mullen stood In support of preparedness, while Governor Morehead, I. J. Dunn and C. W. Bryan spoke in opposition to it. Applause was about equally divided. Mr. Bryan alone touched on the pro hibition question and declared himself in favor of it. Mayor Jim Dohlman made nn earnest speech In favor of placing the "man above the dollar," and declared that Omaha democrats would support the present state officers for re-election and W. J. Bryan for delegnteat-lurge to the National convention. j 20 OFF j i ON ALL - S Winter Goods Inventory Time Will Soon Be Here And in Order to Reduce Stock Will Give 20 Per Cent Off on All Winter Goods For Two Weeks Only.
