Monday evening the neighbors gath ered at the home of Wm. Hoopei's and showed the Inmates of the Jiotne a iioIbv time. However the young married man, soon opened the doors and invited the crowd lu, the evening was spent in a social way and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hooper are now at home Relation of Alfalfa To Soil Improvement Tho unquallud recommendation as a soil Improver that Is continually being given alfalfa is lesponsible for the very common belief that this crop Is ouo which should he grown extensive ly on poor or unproductive soils. No greater mistake could be made than to sow alfalfa, especially In the east ern state., on land which is not in a high condition of fertility It Is tiui) that, 'being a legume, it betiellts thu soil tluoiigh tin addition of nitrogen fixed by otgaiilsms form ing nodules on its loots, mid thioiivh Its roots it not only supplies consider able quantities of humus but greatly improves the mechanical condition of the soil, l in "pioductng piolltable yields of hay, alfalfa utilizes large quantities of phosphorus and potassium, which must be obtained either directly nom the soil or from added fertilizer. Whether alfalfa is a soil improver is a question which can not be answered without some explanation In the sense In which the term is commonly used, alfalfa is not. a soil impioving crop, since it can not be ntlllcd in the miiiih, Dimmer as cowpeas, soy beans, crimson clover, or hairy vetch for the building up of worn-out or de pleted lands. On the other hand, It enriches the good Mills through the nitiogipu and humus added to the soil by Its roots and crowns when the old field of nlfalfa Is broken up and also by the mechanical action of Its roots upon thu soli. Fui thei more, the pre paration of the laud prior to seeding the alfalfa and the treatment in the way of top dressing and fertilizing which follow during the few yars of Its existence doubtless have a very beiii-flclal effect on the crops succeed ing it. In actual practice, then, alfalfa im proves good laud but can not be con sidered in connection with poor land, as it is uot a piolltable crop to grow on unfertile soils. )-yS xl FURNITURE We have all the latest designs of staple articles, and can fit you out, from parlor to kitchen.
