A bfc I THE RED CLOUD CHIEF RJ Cloud, Nabrntkn. PUBLISHED EVEHY THURSDAY Kntcrcit In the rontolilrc nt Hec! Cloud, Neb. ai Second class Matter 0 B. UALB l'UllUSIIKIt tUK ONLY DKMOCIlATIcJ 1'ArKH WKIISTEK COUNTY IN When the buildings now under con attraction on Webster street are com spletedour business homes will pre Mnt a very pleasing appearance. Solid brick blocks with modern plate glass fronts are ample evidence of the per aanency of our residence. Hcd Cloud has made rapid ndvnuccment since the iSrst trading post was established hero. Crop conditions in this county never liavo been better at thin time of the year. Tho Hist crop of nl fulfil iilicndy cut lh hii exceptionally henvy oil", tlio wheat is In splendid condition, the corn is all that could be expected. Wheat Is pi-ncilcully made. Harvest lug will commence in a couple of weeks then .luly and August will set tle tho corn crop. At the same time there Is an abundance of Harden truck of very excellent quality. ( Editor Voughon of the Guide Rock Blgual Is greatly bothered these days with torn cats and potato bugs, lie tpends all his time during the day in capturing cue destructive insect that is bound to deprive him of something to at when the snow comes, nud at night be Is engaged In throwing his best shoes over the back fence In a vain endeavor to sllenco the melodious munlo of one or two harmless torn cats. It Is a bad combination and he has our sympathy. If you want to see this town grow, remember that you nie a part of it ml that its growth depends as much on you as on your neighbors. Don't get the idea that the future prosperity Of this town rests with u few, for it is the business of the many. Above all, don't criticize those who arc trying to upbuild the community and do nothing joursolf . They at least have tho prop r spirit and, just as long as you deny them your support, just that "much harder their work will be. " Tho United States supremo court de cided Monday that the two cent rate In Minnesota should stand. Nebraska people will rejoice In tills victory us much as the people of Minnesota be cause the same conditions prevail here. Had this decision been the reverse there Is little question but what the all roads would attack our two cent far law and tho maximum rote law. The court decided in effect that the state legislature and the state railway commission did have the right to fix Urates within the state and that the federal government had no authority under the Interstate law to Interfere with the state's business. We will continue to ride for two cents a mile here in Nebraska and "Barkis is willln'". IvSSgSvvA r nvCsSCS1 Goodjr See the Good Year Casings and Tubes before you buy. We handle all sizes and carry a large stock. You want to remember that the Good Year people made a reduction on the 1st of April of 10 per cent on all of their castings and tubes. It is not very often that a Good Year casing or tube goes wrong, but when you do you will find their adjustment very satisfactory. We also. ca.rry a good stock of Presto Tanks for ex change and can show you the famous Presto Inflator, which can inflate your tires for you with less work and very little expense. Get Polesine. oil to lubricate your cylinders and Panhard oil for your transmission and your car will run smoothly and with less wear. The best oil is none too good for a car. We invite you to come and see us, -when in the village.- CHAS. C. BENNETT, Agent Cowles, . Nebraska .Wheat Nay Equal The 1901 Record The following United Press dispatch to the Huntings Tribune, under date of June 10, will prove interesting read lug: A bumper wheat crop, sufficient to mill more than 10.500,000 barrels of Hour, and which may reach the pro portions of the record wheat harvest of HKH, If conditions from now on are exceptionally favorable, was forecast ed by the department of agriculture in Its June crop report. Government ex ports estimated this year's harvest would be 77i ,00 1,000 bushels, or which 402,000,000 will bo winter wheata re cord for this crop-arid i.Vi.OOO.lKH) bushels will bo spring wheat. The third largest acreage planted nud fav orable growing conditions account for the prospects for an abundant yield. Concerning Alfalfa Despite tliu fact that alfalfa has be come one of Nebraska's staple crops, we llud that time of cutting mid mothods of curing for thu hay vary widely If cut toocaily the plant is delicleut in feeding value; If out too late the stems aiu woody and the value thereby lessened. Three rules as to time of cuttidg may be laid down: First, cut when from one-tenth to one-fourth of the total flowers are In bloom; second, cut when a new growtli starts at the crowns, even if few plants have begun to blossom; third, cut when the lower leaves turn yellow and drop off. The change in color is due to a fungus disease, which spreads with greatrupld, ity and lessens the valuo of the hay. Some men plan on leaving thu first crop until somewhat mature and usiug fur horse feed. Under east Nebraska conditions, this is poor farm manage merit as the first Crop is more apt to be attacked by leufspot than litter crops. We have our greatest ralnMill in June, und u delay of u few days may mean a delay of a week longer than was anticipated; it is best ta take good haying weather when it comes and hui vest the crop even If it little lacking in maturity. Thu fact that the corn Held uud wheat harvest, fol lowed closely 'by threshing, and the cuttlug of timothy hay compete with the second cutting of ulfulfu for labor means that If thu farmer has much alfalfa, a part of It will not bo cut un til It is In full blossom, or later. W thus have our mature crop for the horses, without running the. risk of. leaf blight spoiling the first crop. Ileal Estate transfers. For the week endiug Juno 10th, 101.'!. Compiled by M. W.
