Ttstiit-xm srrsritaps k 50,000 NEEDED TO HARVEST WESTERN CANADA'S CROP Take 160,000 Alto gether to Take Care of Yield of Prairie Provinces. One hundred and sixty-two thousand farm hands will be required this year to hnrvcfit tho grain crops of Mani toba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Of this number the local help will pro Tldo about 112,000, which will leavo nbout 50,000 extra farm hands. Thero Is, therefore, a great demand for this class of laborers In all parts of West erti Canada. In order to meet tho re quirements It has been arranged to grant very low railway rates from all boundary points reached by Canadian railways. In order to secure these rates It will bo necessary for you to call on one of the following authorized agents of tho Canadian government: M. V. Mclnnes, 176 Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Michigan; C. A. Laurlor, Mar quette, Michigan; J. 8. Crawford, Syracuse, N. Y.; Thos. llctberlngton, Room 202, 73 Tremont Street, Boston, Mass.; H. M. Williams, 413 Gardner Uldg., Toledo, Ohio; Geo. Alrd, 210 Traction-Terminal Dldg., Indianapolis, Indiana; C. J. Droughton, Room 412 Merchants Loan & Trust Bldg., Chi cago, III.; Geo. A. Hall, 2nd Floor, 125 Second Street, Milwaukee, Wis.; 15. T. Holmes, 315 Jackson Street, St. Paul, Minn.; Chas. Pilling, Clifford Block, Grand Forks, N. D.; J. M. Mac tachlnn, Box 197, Watcrtown, S. D.; W. V. Bennett, Room 4, Boo Bldg., Ornuha, Neb.; W. II. Rogers, 125 West itth Street, Kansas City, Mo.; BonJ. Davles, Room 6, Dunn Block, Great Falls, Montana; J. 11. Carbonncau, Jr., 217 Main Street, Biddeford, Me.; J. N. Grieve, Auditorium Building, Spokane, Wash. This will givo to intending harvest laborers a splendid opportunity to look over Iho magnificent wheat fields or Western Canada and will givo them the best evidence that can bo secured of the splendid character of that coun try tram the farmer's standpoint. There will bo at least 200.000,000 bushels of wheat harvested within tho area of tho three provinces above named this year and It is expected that the yield will run from 15 to 25 bushels per aero. Many farmers, this year, will net, as a result of their labors, as much as f 8 to $10 per aero and many of them will deposit as profits ns much as 98,000 to $10,000. The wide publicity that has been given to the excellent crop that Is be ing raised in central Alberta and southern Alberta, central Saskatche wan and southern Saskatchewan, and also in Manitoba, will increase tho price of lands in these three provinces from $3 to $5 per acre and the man who was fortunate enough to secure lands at from $12 to $20 per acre will have reason for gratification that he exercised sufficient forethought to in vest, whllo the man who was fortu nate enough to secure a homestead of 1C0 acres free will also have a greater reason to feel pleased. Notwithstanding the great addition to the acreage this year over last and the largo crop that will be ready 'for harvest there is no reason to becomo alarmed that tho harvest will not bo reaped successfully. There will be a great demand for these low rates dur ing the next couple of months; bo sure to make your application to any of the ngents above mentioned that may bo in your territory at as early a date as possible. Harvesting will commence about the 25th of July and contlnuo for flvo or six weeks, when threshing will begin and there will b plenty of work until November. Too Dangerous. In the struggling days of Tuskogce, Booker T. Washington found that he would have to use an old chicken house' for a schoolroom. "Uncle," he said to an old colored man, "I want you to come down at nine o'clock tomorrow morning and help me clean out a henhouse." "Law now, Mr. Washington," the old 'man expostulated, "you-all don't want to begin clcanln' out no hen nous roun' yere In do day time." Success Magazine. Girl chums are almost as thick as a fat roan. Chickens for broiling or frying should be fed extra for two or three weeks to get them fat, with plenty of good, solid meat on breast and thighs. Range poultry Is never classed as rlrat-class market poultry. Put six to eight chickens in a clean, roomy coop; placo coop In shed, which should bo kept quiet and mod erately dark. Give first morning feed of cormueal mixed with milk; Just what thoy will eat with a relish. At nine o'clock give a second meal of baked bread mixed with boiled vege tables. At noon givo cracked corn mixed with a little wheat. At 5 p. m. give cnrnmeal mixed with milk, They should bo fed at regular hours and given only what they eat up with a relish at each meal. No loud should bo allowed to lie In tho coop, ns thny lose their nppetlte when food Is left in the coop to turn sour. Hour food Ib not fit to feed. Wash out the can every morning This is necessary and should not bo neglected. Give a little gravel or charcoal about twice n week. Give milk instead of water. By this meth od chickens may be fattened In two weeks' time. Chickens thus fed will mnke prime market poultry and will commnnd an extra price. Value of Grit and Charcoal. It pnj'H to keep n supply of grit, oyster shell and charcoal before tho fowls. Tho more you can coax your laying hen to eat and assimilate, tho more material she will have to turn into eggs. Her body must bo nour ished and material supplied for eggs. To provide for both purposes during cold weathor meanB grinding up a great deal or food. Tho grit helps to do this and tho oyster shell furnishes material for tho egg shell. Charcoal furnishes no nourishment, but pro motes digestion, nnd is a bowel cor rective. Brooding Hens. With brooding hens we give exactly the same diet, except for soft food. That affects the fertility and is used only occasionally for a change. Then we usually give blood meal and bran mixed In the hopper. In tho penB we "keep grit and shell all the time, and Ince grit Is scarce In this country, we use gravel, coal cinders and broken glass In order that the hens may have something Bharp to cut and digest their food, , POPULAR BREED OF CHICKENS White Plymouth Rocks Are Large, Strong and Vigorous, Besides Be ing Excellent Layers, Whlto Plymouth Rocks resemble the bnrrrd in every particular except col or. A great many people buy Incubators nnd brooders and expect them to run themselves. Thero would be jUBt ns much senso In thf hen leaving her eggs for tho wind and sun to hntch In stead of setting on them and guarding them, night nnd day, for 21 days. Inanlmnte things won't run them selves; thoy must bo run. Machines are nil right, but they haven't brains; men must supply tho Intelligence. Now, It hns been proved by thou sands or people In dirforent pnrts ol tho world that artificial incubation nnd brooding of poultry Is an assured success. But to mnko this success re quires close personal attention from stnrt to finish. Tho work cannot be Intrusted to any Tom or Dick or Har ry. Tom nnd Dick and Harry hired to do the work may set the machine going, but thoy won't keep them going. They lack tho personal equa tion. They would Just as soon see you make n failure as they would sec you mako a success of the chicken busi ness. To hatch and brood chickens artifi cially oue must stay right with the work, day and night. This docs not mean that you have to alt up with and nurse the machines and baby birds, but that you just about know exactly what they are doing every hour of the twenty-four. Many people fall to keep tho Infant chicks dry, warm and well supplied with fresh air In tho brooder. This is a simple matter, but an essential. A herd or goats will get along In a re moto brushy pasture for weeks at s tlmo with nothing but bushes and fence rails to feed upon. Not so with baby chicks; they must be fed at least five times each day. The neglect of slmplo sanitation In the brooder Is responsible for heavy mortality among young feathered stock. Fifty or a hundred or more young birds In one close room will soon mnke foul conditions, which in turn will soon lead to disease and death if the foulness Is not removed. Thoso who aro very careful to keep the brooder scrupulously clean usually have good success with broader chicks, and those who allow them to become filthy meet with inevitable loss. , Failures, then, In hatching and brooding poultry by artificial means are due to the use of infertile eggs, al lowing temperatures In the machine to run too high and too low, lack of good ventilation, failure to keep tho brooder clean and tho young blrdB supplied with direct sunlight, and Ir regular feeding. These may all be summed up In one phrase lack of close attention to details. lESf Feeding tho turkeys too often Is an Injurious practice. Every farmer should go Into tho puro bred poultry class. Don't expect to get winter eggs from late hatched chicks. Get rid of soma of tho roosters that aro now worrying the hens to no good purpose Tho Indian Runner duck Is not In clined to fatten bo readily as other varieties. Hunt up private customers and agree to sell them strictly fresh eggs then do It. Tho quickest way to "break up" a setting hen Is to shut her up a day with a rooster. The comb Is as sure an Indicator of the health of the bird as the tongue Is of the person. Teach the turkeys to have a regu lar feeding ground apart from tho other fowls of tho farm. Lato batched chicks mako good broilers or soft roasters In the fall when the prices aro high.
