Work is a moral and physical up
lifter: it is n naniiuou for sorrow: idle
ness brings moral decay and furnishes
an incentive to crime. Tho avalanche
of crime that is sweeping over our
beautiful laud Is largely duo to the
fact that too many would rather steal
than work. The life of duty, not the
life of more ease or mere pleasure, Is
the kind of life which makostho great
men and women The 11 rat prlo that
life offers is the chance to work at
work worth doing.

THE LEGISLATURE
i ne suiiaie mis passed another lion
pavth.au judiciary act, introduced by
Senators Lee and McUrew, tho supreme
court having deolavod unconstitution
al tlio one passed two yeavs ago. The
features to which tho court objected
In the former measure liavo been eli
minated in tho present bill, and it is
Tell me, ye winged winds that
around my pathway roar, do ye not
know some quiet spot where wives
clean house no more; somo lone, se
questered dale, some Island, oeonngirtj
whore life is not one ceaseless war
with cobwebs and with dirt; where
only nature's carpet spreads beneath
their tired feet, and wretched men are
ne'er compelled its emerald folds to
beat? Tho lake breeze fanned my
heated faco and said: "Meat on?
Theie's no such place "
A slandering tongue is more to bo
dreaded than tho most loathsomo rep
tile that crawls upon the face of tlio
earth for he will givo warning before
he strikes you -but a slanderer never.
Let a man or woman start on the
downward road to ruin and we are all
prone to step aside and cry out, "slide,
on, blide on to destruction," instead of
stretching out tho hand of brotherly
love and staying their progress, wo
stand by and let them slide. He who
can stoop down and lift up his fallen
brother from the mlro and phico him
on his feet and whisper sweet counsel
in his ear and bid him go and lead a
belter life, is truly a benefactor to tho
race.
