Before the speaker could announce the result, the Democrats obtained a recapitulation, and attempted to break the quorum by lenving the hall, but entne back, accompanied by Ueckham, who authorized the withdrawal of his iiJMue and released the Democrats from the primary nomination pledge to him in the hope that some other Democrat would' be named who could defeat Uradley. The four bolting Dem ocrats were, surrounded by life-long party friends and urged to withdraw their support from Uradley and elect McCreury. James, or any Democrat that they might name, but they re ma. nod obdurate, declaring that the proposition came too late. '' . Remains of Father 'Leo Heinncns in terred at Paterson, N. J. Paterson, N. J., March 2. The fu neral of Father Leo Heiurichs was held this morning. Solemn requiem mass was said by Father Edward Ulecke, assisted by the forty or more monks and lay brothers In St. Bona Ventura's monastery. Bishop John J. O'Connor of the Human Catholic dio cese of New York and a number of high church dignitaries were present. Interment was in the plot of tho Fran ciscan monks in Holy Sepulchre cem etery. Ten thousand persons looked upon the face of Father Leo at St. Bona ventura monastery, in which the mur deied priest was for years the pastor. During the nine hours the body lay in state an unbroken line of mourners pussed tho bier. So great was the throng that a detail of fifty policemen was required to maintain the forma tions of two lines that extended for blocks. Through n succession of snow, sleet and rain storms outside the par ishioners stood for hours patiently waiting their turns. Owing to failing health Father Leo was transferred last September to Denver, where at the chancel rail of St. Elizabeth's Catholic church he was shot and killed by the avowed' an archist known as Gulscppc Alio. Pat Garrett Is Killed. El Paso. Tex., March 2. At the In quest held Into the killing of Pat Gar rett by Wayne Hrazle, the coroner's Jury at Uis Cruces, N. M., returned a verdict that Garrett had come to his death as the result of wounds Inflicted by a revolver in tho hands of Urazlo. The solo eye-witness to the killing, Carl Adamson, told the story of the shooting, In which Hrazle threatened Gurrett. Brnzle declared the shooting was in self-defense, but made no fur ther statement. In an ad dress before the University club, Dr. Hanoy W. Wiley, chief chemist of tUo agricultural department, said the ef fect of distilled spirits on mankind was bad, regaidlcss of the moderation in which they are used. He added that no person really needed them. Dr. Wiley, while theoretically a pro hibitionist, said he did not favor abso lute prohibition. He declared, how ever, that he was opposed to saloonn where men stood at u bar and drunk until they were Intoxicated. "1 would rather penult people to buy whiBky and other drinks and carry them to their homos, wheio they may be used with their foods and with their families," he declared, "and to close up the places where men are al lowed to Imbibe too freely." Henry Uergh, nephew of the founder of the Aniei lean Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in a letter in connection with tho offer of a prize of $juu by tun society for an Invention for tho humane slaughter of animals for food, objects to present slaughter methods as cruelty. "In all the relations oi man to the lower animals there Is nothing," says the letter, "Involving so much suffering as the raising and killing of those used for market pur poses." Electricity for tho purpose has been considered objectionable, because of the danger to human life, its question able humanity especially in unskilled hands, and its possible injurious ef fects on tho flesh of the animals. BANKER BARTON GOES FREE Perjury Case Is Nolle Prossed by County Attorney Moore. Tecumseh, Neb., March 2. County Attorney J. V. Moore has nolle prossed tho case against W. it. Barton or Te cumseh in the district court. Mr. Bar ton, who was president of the fulled Chamberlain banking house of this city, was accused of giving contra dictory evidence in cases hinging on the bank failure and was prosecuted for perjury. At a trial the jury was hung. Lust week it slmilur case, that of the state against F. A. Taylor, who was vice president of the hunk, re sulted in a verdict of acquittal. The similarity of the cases enteied' into Mr. Moore's action.
