At the meeting of the Hepublican state central committee in Lincoln on Wednesday it was decided to hold the state convention in Omaha, March l'J. Al Sears says a Catholic priest at Downs recently told him the following story: An Irish section boss was dis charged, and an Italian placed over him as foreman. Iu a mix-up at the north ward school, Wednesday noon, Fred Itlauke, the crippled son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Illanke, was struck on the head with a rock by "Hoots" Mackey. The blow partially stunned young Itlauke, cut a deep gash iu his head aud caused biood to How from his ears. John Polnicky of this city wants to be a delegate to the Democratic na tional convention which meets in Den ver next July. John Is certainly large enough, both mentally and physically, to hold down a seat in any kind of a convention, aud the Democrats of this section of the state could do no better than send him to Denver. The Hepublican state central com mittee left it optional with the county committees whether or not they should hold primaries or caucuses to secure an expression of preference iu the matter of a presidential candidate. If a county committee decides on the primary plan, official ballots can be procured from the secretary of the state central committee upon applica tion. C. C. McConkey received a letter the first of the week from his son Ralph, who is an electrician on the battleship Connecticut, with the big licet that is now on its way from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The letter was written ft 0111 the Island of Trinidad, Hritish West Indies, just off the north coast of Venezuela, and was dated Christ inas day. He said the weather was very hot, aud that he intended to go in swimming that afternoon. William Roberts, a former resident of this county, died January 1 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Miller Sehonboe, corner Fifth and Grove streets, Council Hlufi's, Iowa, from an attack of pneumonia, after' an illness of live days. He was born in God ingdon, IOngland, and came to America early in the last half of the nineteenth century, having spent the greater por tion of his manhood in thi.s country, lie has made his home in Council Hlufi's for the past four years. De ceased is survived by his wife and one daughter. Mrs. Fml Howard. Mrs. Fred Howard, well known in this eity, died at her home in Council Itluil's, Iowa, Wednesday morning at :;i0, and the funeral was held there this afternoon atl o'clock. Mrs. How ard formerly lived in Red Cloud and, with her husband and daughter, re moved to Council Hlufi's ten or twelve years ago. She Is survived by her laughter, Miss Ada Howard, who is a teacher in the Council Hlufi's schools. Mrs. . S. Davis. Mrs. C. S. Davis died at her home near North Hraneh last Sunday and was buried Monday, Rev. C. A. Wilson, pastor of the Haptist church of this city officiating. Frances A. La Muuyon was born in Edmonson county, Kentucky, Janu ary 2, 18f0, and was married to C. S. Davis in 1808. To this union nine children were born. Martha Banks. Martha, the 9-year-old daughter of .Mr. and Mrs. Ren P. Hanks of Cather on precinct, died Monday morning and was buried Tuesday. Funeral .ervices were conducted at the home mil at the Norwegian Lutheran church, by Rev. II. L. Pert. The im mediate cause of her death was pneu monia, although she had been in ill health for 11 year or so. She was born January HI, 1801), and lacked but a few days of being nine years of age. Birthday Surprise Party. Last Sunday, January fi, being the birthday of Miss Lulu Turner and her brother Grant (they are not twins, however), their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Turner, remembered them by giving them a surprise and a bounti ful dinner, in which they were joined by their relatives and friends. A joy ful time was had, all returned to their homes wishing them many returns of the occasion.
