Thomas, living on Klin Creek, lias had a severe time with his family this winter. The children had dipthe ria, then one of the little fellows dis located his shoulder, and lastly, a six year old had his skull fractured by a ball bat. A very destructive fire started on the farm of Mr. Itcck, a mile north and three west of Inavale. The lire trav eled as far west as Uiverton and burned over an area of ten square miles. Stacks of hay, cribs of corn and other proiiurtv were destroyed by it. It is reported that several children were burned to death. The Orthopedic Hospital. The Nebraska house has passed a bill appropriating 330,000 for a build ing and 337,000 for maintenance of the Orthopedic hospital at Lincoln. This is one of the most deserving institu tions in the state. In the Orthopedic hospital the maimed, crippled and de formed children of residents of the state receive free medical and surgical treatment. A year ago the editor paid a visit to this hospital and was greatly impressed with the good work that was being done. Among the patients at that time were two little children who had been so "bow-legged'' they could hardly stand, but the doctors had straightened their limbs to the normal position. Other children had "club feet" straightened, and still others were being treated for all kinds of af flictions. The children all seem happy at the prospect of being restored to the form which nature intended the-should bear. Silver Wedding. Charles O. Peterson and Annie Sand berg were married in Des Moines, Iowa, March 0, 18S3, and came to Webster immediately afterward to make their home. Last Saturday was the 35th anniversary of their wedding, and a large crowd of their relatives and friends were invited to their home, seven miles southeast of Ucd Cloud, to partake of a sumptuousdinuer in honor of the day. Many of those Invited were kept away by the severe storm, but those who attended enjoyed a grand time. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson re ceived numerous useful and valuable presents of silverware as tokens of the friendship and esteem of their guests. We extend congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, and hope to live to chronicle the celebration of the golden milestone in their journey of wedlock, twenty-ilve years since. ;:M:2-::e::i'::e:!C:'i:':?:f tf O 1 1 TkT a. ocnuui noxes si Q. W. DUDLKY, SUPT. The walls of the assembly room have been bordered with green burlap, held in place by strips of moulding, aboc and below. There seems to be little doubt that the bonds will carry. The next thing, then, Is to get ready to build a good, substantial building one that can be thoroughly ventilated and equally heated and lighted. There Is another law before the legis lature one that was strongly endor sed by the State Teachers' Association and for which the state superintendent is working hard: The law providing 3700 annually for fifty high schools that shall qualify for the normal high school course. lied Cloud can qualify by adding a fourth high school teacher and purchasing some 3100 worth of books on pedagogy. This law is quite likely lo pass. If it does lied Cloud is sure to take advantage of Its terms. While no definite action has been taken, it is practically certain that the North ward building will be used for the high school in ease the bonds carry and the new building for the grades. The high school law, offering free tui tion to rural pupils, has passed both houses and has been signed by the governor. This measure will surely greatly inciease the high school en rollment. The revenue from this source will doubtless be sullieient to pay for the services of a fourth teacher in the high school. The assembly room Is too small for our present en rollment. However, the partition can easily be removed between that room the olllce, this affording about 350 ad ditional square feet. In faet, the en tire North ward building is none too large for the enrollment that the high school can secure if we make the effort. Above all things, we should have at least two courses. We should not in sist on all pupils taking the full Latin course. We should have more history, science, english and mathematics that may be chosen instead of the Latin. There is little doubt that next year will mark a great change in the high school, as well as in the grades. 1 The Strongest 1 W W m to to to to to to to to to to (0 to t to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to Suit FOR B IN PROBATE COURT.
