Chlcngo, Oct. 1C Tho investigation of tho conditions surrounding the grnln market begun hero by tho In terstate commerce commission prom ises to reveal startling Information na to tho existence of a trust beforo its completion. Witnesses told of tho trugglo between tho farmer and or ganized commission men in Iowa and Illinois and how tho farmer and inde pendent dealer was discriminated against by the railroads. Tho Ilrst witness was A. T. Aygarn or Pontine, 111., who told of his strug gles against tho Illinois Grain Dealers' association. Mr. Aygarn broke Into tears on tho witness stnnd and It was necessary to excuse him from giving further evidence. Ho declared as he left the stand, tenrs streaming down his face and his voice broken by his grief, that ho had been ruined be causo ho had dared to deal with the farmers and with tho track shovelers. He declared the discrimination against him had been doubled because the railroads had refused to glvo him cars In which to transport his grain. Practically tho same story was told toy other witnesses. Secret letters and circulars to mem bers of the Iowa State Grnln Denlers' association and similar documents la eued to members of tho Illinois associa tion were read to tho commissioners nnd tho statements wero considered so unusual by tho commissioners thnt tho witnesses wero rigidly nxamlned. J. E. Prennan and J. G. Dunn, grain solicitors for a Chicago house, told of the struggle between the favmors and tho organized commission men in Illi nois and Iowa. Both men declared that their Arm had been blacklisted and boycotted becauso it persists In buy ing grain from farmer elevator com panies and not alone from members of tho grain associations. J. Rosenbaum of the J. Rosenbaum Grain company of Chicago declared that tho farmers themselves had formed a combination and would not sell their grain to any but their own devators. Kearney, Nob., Oct. 13. Fire de stroyed half tho business part of tho vlllago of Poole, near hero. Seven buildings wero burned, Including tho postolllco and bank. Beatrice, Neb., Oct. 1C Ezra M. Buswell, one of tho loading Christian Sclenco prnctltloners and teachers of tho west, died quite suddenly at his homo here. Ho sufTored from dropsy and heart failure, but declined tho services of a physician. Ho was a close personal friend and student of Mary Baker Eddy, founder of tho doc trine. Suit to Oust Lincoln Gas Company. Lincoln, Oct. 10. Tho Lincoln city council adopted tho report of n com mltteo declaring the Lincoln Gas com pany without a franchise, nnd Instruct ed tho city attorney to begin suit of ouster. Tho gas company Is capital ized at $3,7ri0,000. It Is owned by what is known as the McMillan syndi cate of New York. H. L. Doherty of Denver Is tho president. Switchman Dead on Track. Omaha, Oct. 12. Five cars passed over Switchman Edward Kelly In the Missouri Pacific yards at Fifteenth and Cuming streets, cutting his body In two nnd killing him Instantly. Kelly was working on top of a train and tho breaking of a stick with which ho was twisting a brake wheel threw him to the track in front of tho string of cars. The 'rain could not bo stopped until ! .o cars had run over him. 3-Year-Old Child Burned to Death. Beatrice, Neb., Oct. 12. Tho three-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Morgan, living near Wymore, was burned to death. Mrs. Morgan left the child playing In tho yard while sho wont to a neighbor's. The child got hold of some matches and made a bon fire of somo rubbish, tho flames spreading to tho baby's clothes. SAWMILL BOILER EXPLODES Two Men Are Killed and Three Serl. ously Injured Near Vlncennes. VJnccnnos, Ind., Oct. 10. Two men were killed nnd three injured when a forty-horse power boiler at Frank Gos nell's sawmill, located fifteen miles southwest of here, exploded. Gosnoll, the owner, nnd the engineer, Georgo Groves, who were within n short dis tance of the boiler, were blown over 100 feet, their bodies being horribly mutilated. The mill building was to tally wrecked. Major Frcdenhall Acquitted. Mnnlla, Oct. 15. Fromont, Nob., Oct. 13. While groping about In his cellar Charles Holdsworth came In contact with a llvo electric light wire and was killed. Ho was found by his wife, who went to tho cellar because of his long ab sence. Holdsworth had gone to build a fire in tho furnace, turned on the electric light and took hold of the wire to movo It out of his way.
