of the mutiny at Tambov, which ap

Christian population.

Yosemite Valley.
"Wawona, Cal., July 9. Five

.ul In rapid succession, at a curve In
the road near Ahwanee, at the Iden
tical spot where a lone bandit, oper
ating a year ago, relieved several
-wealthy tourists of their valuables.
'Tho stages were traveling- sufficiently
far apart to avoid each other's dust
and when the first vehicle reached the
turn In tho road the highwayman,
whose features were concealed by a
duBter thrown over his head, stepped
tout, pointed a gun at the driver and
commanded him to halt. Some ot
the women passengers screamed, but
others began without delay to secreto
ttheir valuables. Tho highwayman di
rected all passengers to throw out
their money and jewelry and when the
order met with compliance, directed
the driver to move on. The second
stago arrived within a few minutes
matter tho first and the driver and pas
sengers suffered a similar experience.
"Tho process was repeated until all
tlve had been halted and robbed, when
the bandit disappeared in tho brush.
i Wills Himself In Unusual Fashion.
New York, July 9.' An unidentified
man killed himself In an unusual fash
ion in tho Bronx, to the horror of a
number of persons who happened to
ue In St. Mary's park, near the scene
-of his suicide. After pacing tho side
walk for some time In evident mental
distress, ho drove his head against
-the thick plato glass front window of
a saloon until It was shivered from
top to bottom. Then, with a big frag
ment ot the broken pane, he cut his
throat. A policeman summoned an
ambulance, but the man bled to death
liefore he reached tho place.
Feud Claims Three Victims.
Muskogee, I. T., July 10. Ernest
ivnd PIobb Hubbard aro dead and,
Reuben Klrby fatally injured as tho
result of a pitched battle near West
villo, I. T., between members of the
'Hubbard and Klrby families, which
have been keeping alive a feud for
several months. Winchesters and pis
tols wore used by both factions. In a
recent fight ono of the KIrbys was
:r,hot by Will Revls, a friend of tho
jHubbards.

Kansas City Brewers Give In.
Kansas City July 10. The browers
who control tho Joints In Kansas City,
Kan., admitted defeat In their effort
to keep their places open In defiance
of tho law when they announced that
they will agree never to sell liquor to
the joints in Kansas City, Kan., again
and promised to glvo bond as a guar
anteo of good faith.
Almost Famished When Found.
Taylor, Tjcb., July 10. Mr. Wins
low, the blm 1 man who was lost In
the sand hills near the Calamus river
on tho afternoon of July 3, was found
by a party of fifteen men several
miles from honvj. Ho was asleep
when found and was almost famished
for want of water.
Traveling Man Injured.
Lincoln, July 11. N. W. Howclls,
agent for an eastern yeast firm, was
dangerously hurt here. He fell from
the footboard of a crowded car as an
other car was passing. He was rolled
between tho cars, his noso almost cut
off and his leg broken. It Is thought
that he will recover.

Chamberlain's Bond Is Readjusted.
TocumBeh, Neb., July 10. The bond
of Charles M. Chamberlain was read
justed In tho district court here.
Seven cases against the ex-banker
wero nolle prossed by tho county at
torney, that officer thinking they had
been well covered In tho other cases
tried. Tho bond In tho four remain
ing cases, three indlcemtnts and ono
information, vas fixed at $2,000. Mrs.
D. P. Osgood of Sterling went surety
of the bonds. Chamberlain stands
convicted of embezzlement In ono
case in the district court of Nemaha
county and two new ones have recent
ly been filed against him In the coun
ty court of this county.

Mrs McComber Celebrates Release
From Norfolk Insane Asylum.
Catsklll, N. Y., July 7. Happy in
her new found liberty, Ida Irish Mc
Comber, who last week was released
from the Norfolk, Neb., Insane asylum,
has settled down In a cottage at Cox
sacklo, at which place Luther P.
Stehr, tho loyal cousin, who secured
her discharge, Is employed as chief
draughtsman In tho Kennedy Valvo
works. Mr. Stehr admitted that while
In the Norfolk asylum Mrs. McComber
penned tender missives and with a
view to matrimony mailed them to
correspondents In the hope of thus
securing her llborty. "As to swind
ling," said he, speaking of tho money
and presents received by Mrs. Mc
Comber while confined in tho asylum,
"wo aro awaiting from Dr. Alden, su
perintendent of tho Norfolk asylum,
certain papers relating to her corre
spondence and that within a short
tlmo every dollar and every present
will bo returned to tho parties who
made tho gifts."

went over tho telephone wires he-
twoon Miss Anna G. Tompsett of Oil
South Twentieth street and Captain
McGuIre of tho Lincoln police force.
Miss Tompsett came from Canada re
cently and Is still loyal io the land of
her birth. Yesterday morning her
neighbors were startled to seo tho
Union Jack of England floating from
tho flagepole In front of Miss Tomp
sett's residence.
Presently an old soldier came limp
ing down tho streeL As the English
flag caught his eye ho stood for a mo
ment as If petrified. Then he turned
and hobbled quickly Into a nearby
grocery store. Thero ho telephoned
to tho police station. Officer Morso
wns detailed to tho spot at once and,
after the above telephone conversa
tion, the English Hag came down and
was placed In a spot where It could
not offend American patriotism. Miss
Tompsett, however, was accorded tho
honors of war and was allowed to haul
down her own flag.

cars. Eight men were slightly in
jured and ono seriously.
When the switch engine collided
with the passenger train Engineer
Willinms was thrown heavily against
the boiler. Ho and his fireman then
jumped, the engineer sustaining seri
ous injuries. Tho engine, with no
guiding hand, dashed forward at once.
The locomotive crossed eleven streets
before arriving at the depot, and tho
depot proper. Tho yardman threw a
switch and the "wild" engine collided
with mall cars on a "siding.
FIGHTING THE SALTON SEA.
Southern Pacific Road Tries to Drive
River Back to Its Old Bed.
Salton, Cal., July 10. Confronted
with a final washout within the next
b!x weeks by the rapidly advancing
waters of the Salton sea, the South
ern Pacific company Is now making
every effort possible to turn the Colo
rado river back Into Its old channel
which leads Into the Gulf of Califor
nia. Forty miles of the company's trans
continental lino Is affected. Largo
gangs of men with teams and graders '
have been sent to Pilot Knob, a few
miles this side of Yuma, and the con
struction of a nine-mile spur track
branching from the main line at Pilot
Knob leading down through Mexico
and ending at the fammm intake nas
been commenced. This track will no
used for the transportation of mate
rial required to dam tho flood at tho
Intake.
Berry Gives Himself Up.
Boston, July 10. Charles F. Berry,
who was Indicted In 1905 on seventy
four counts charging embezzlement of
$300,000 from estates of which he was
trustee, returned to this city and sur
rendered himself to the district attor
ney. Later he was arraigned In tho
criminal court on tho charge of lar
ceny and held In $15,000 ball, which
was furnished. Berry's surrender
was by a prearranged plan. About
three weeks ago a man called at tho
district attorney's office and showed
Mr. Moran a letter from Berry, who
was at that time in South America.
In the letter Berry said he wished to
come home end would do so If ho was
granted reasonable bail and fair treat
ment. Handwriting Expert in Hartje Case.
Pittsburg, July 10. David N. Car
valhoe, the handwriting expert who
has been engaged In many famous
cases of tho country, has been called
here to testify for Mrs. Hartje In tho
divorce case brought by Augustus J.
Hartje, tho millionaire paper manu
facturer. In tho previous hearings of
tho case appeared about forty letters,
It is alleged, Mrs. Hartje wroto to tho
family coachman, Tom Madlne, and
which have been declared a forgery
by Mrs. Hartjo and her counsel. It
Is upon these letters that Mr. Carval
lioo went to work soon aftor ho ar

Car Rolls Down Embankment.
Wichita, Kan., July 10. More than
a dozen passengers were cut and
bruised when a trolley car, which
was carrying thirty persons In this
city, Jumped the track and rolled
i down an embankment. The track had
been weakened by a heavy rain and
the car turned entirely over. Alder
man A. J. Waddell of this city was
badly Injured, but none of the others
was dangerously hurt. Most of the
passengers were women and several
were knocked down and trampled
upon.
Talbot Arrested on Murder Charge.
Steubenvllle, O., July 10. Deputy
Sheriff Murray rearrested Captain R.
W. Talbot of the mine guards at Brad
ley and Guard T. B. Preston on mur
der charges, growing out of the shoot-
ing at the mines of the United States
Coal company, July 1, when five strik
ers were shot, one fatally. Other
guards are deserting Bradley for fear
of prosecutions.
Lincoln Men May Have Taken Rebates
Washington, July 10. According to
reports In circulation here, a half doz
en Lincoln, Neb., business men may
have to defend charges of taking re
bates from the Burlington. It la
claimed that Information is now In
possession of the Interstate commerce
commission which will cause a sensa
tion and may lead to tho Issuing of
warrants.
Drydock Dewey at Olongapo.
Manila, July 10. The drydock Dew
ey arrived at Olongapo this morning.
The trip from Singapore was unevent
ful. Fatal Fight at Barada.
Rulo, Neb., July 11 News from
Barada. Nob., reached here announc
ing the death of a quarter-breed Indian
from near Omaha. This Indian tried
to run things to suit himself and had
pretty much his own way until ho
tried Ramsey, a bridge builder. Tho
Indian drow a revolver and fired two
shots at Ramsey, but both shots
missed. Ramsey grabbed tho gun and
succeeded In taking It from tho In
dian. Quick as a flash ho struck tho
Indian a terrible blow over the head
with tho butt end of tho revolver.
This blow laid the Indian unconscious
on tho floor. Ho regained conscious
ness for only a short time, after which
ho relaxed Into a stupor until death
came to his relief later.
