The United States senate yesterday, by a vote of 30 to 31, decided in favor of a lock canal. Everett Walters of Blue Hill visited at the home of his sister, Mrs. W. C. Frahm, this week. Mrs. Charley Dickenson and child ren of Lincoln are visiting with rela tives in Red Cloud. Leopold Herburger went to Lincoln Monday morning, where he has a posi tion in a job ofllce. Hobbs and little baby of Pawnee City are in Red Cloud visiting Lew Hobbs and family. The new transparent grating for the sidewalk in front of the Potter build ding was put in place this week. A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Z. T. Whitney of Cotcsfield last week and lived but a few hours. Colonel C. W. Kaley is at Thcrmop olis, Wyo., where he will spend about three weeks hunting and fishing. Bruce Frame and Fritz Mcrten drove down from Blue Hill Sunday to attend the evangelistic meetings. Miss Kathrinc Frederick arrived in Rod Cloud Wednesday evening from Meudota, Illinois, to visit her sister, Mrs. Ward L. Austin. Mrs. Norman Morrison, Mrs. W. C. Frahm and Miss Ella Cook were in Blue Hill this week attending the meeting of tho P. E. O's. The county commissioners completed the work of equalizing the assessment Wednesday. There were very few complaints to be adjusted. Judge Burke and wife returned to their home in Arapahoe Tuesday morning, after an extended visit with their daughter, Mrs. Mercer. Mrs. K. T. Tarr and daughter Irene of Sabetha, Kansas, arrived in Rod Cloud Monday evening for a visit with her son, Leroy Tarr and family. About thirty-five people drove up from Guide Rock Wednesday evening to attend the evangelistic meetings. Several also came up on the train. Miss Bessie Ducker stopped in Red Cloud Tuesday on her way to Omaha from Denver, where she accompanied a patient. Miss Ducker is now a nurse in the Presbyterian hospital at Omaha. Miss Laura Hedge was taken to Chicago Sunday morning, where she was successfully operated on for gall stones. She was accompanied by Dr. Mitchell and her sister, Mrs. Orrin Harvey. At the meeting at the city council Monday night the city clerk was In structed to give the Burlington Rail way Co. the required thirty days' no tice that the city would no longer supply the company with water, This action has been taken owing to the numerous complaints of the tax pay ers that they were unable to get a sufficient supply of water. It will ' cause a great reduction in the revenue derived from the water plant, but it is hoped to offset this reduction by making a fiat rate to private consum ers which will increase the revenue sufficiently to equal the loss sustained by cutting off the Burlington.
