Cross Currents Are Visible In the Bus iness Situation. New York, March 31. HralMrcrta says: Cross curronta are v...'., v in tho business situation. Untitled weather, making Tor had roads, has been n check to consumptive spring demand, which also feels the Inlluonco of the Impending coal Btrike. Tho ad vent or spring-like weather, accom panying tho former development, Is, however, favorablo to improvement later on and the hope is still ex pressed that tho coal strike will bo localized to some extent and will not materially Interfero with Industry, which soenis fairly well supplied with fuel. There are reports that spring planting is Interfered with west and south, but later advices point to plant ing actively beginning in the south west and from tho winter wheat belt, uniformly favorablo dispatches are re ceived. Beneath tho surrace happen ings of tho week aro to be discerned tho steady advance of spring trade, tho continuance of the immense ac tivity in building, with collateral heavy dealings In all kinds of lumber nnd material, and the underlying con fidenco In a heavy year's turn over In all lines. Money Is strong and In ac tive demand throughout tho country, partly because of widespread demand for legitimate trade purposes, but also because of the relative slowness of collections, duo to inactive past trade in winter fabrics and tho holding of cotton and grain above export prices. Bank clearings show receding totals, this being mainly due to curtailed speculation. Railway earnings con tinue excellent, as heretofore. The strength of prices in most Industrial lines Is marked. Continued heavy buying of steel rails by railway and traction Interests Is easily tho pre eminent feature of the Iron and steel mnrkets. Wheat exports for the week aro 1, 542,852 bushels. Com exports for tho week are 2.C43.479 bushels. GAS WELL FIRE EXTINGUISHED. Seventh Attempt to Control Roaring Monster at Caney Successful. Independence, Kan., March 30. The Kansas Natural Gas company's big tfns well below Caney, which was struck by lightning Feb. 23, has been successfully extinguished. The sec ond hood, which was a failure, two weeks ago, was placed over the well. Tho ground had been made wet and sort around the well so that the hood sank deep Into it. Previously, the Blx-lnch casing which had cpused the horizontal tongues or fire had been dropped into the hole, and the only fire now was through tho vent pipe In tho top or tho hood. Over 100 yards or canvas ducking was sewed Into big blankets, and first a layer of canvas and then a layer of gumbo was built around the hood, until there were tons of earth banked up. Then tho hood was anchored with big chains. Steam pipes wero connected to the vent to prevent the (lames from rushing down Into the hood when the valvo was shut. Then a big spool was attached to tho long arm used to turn tle valvo nnd around this spool wire was wound. At a given signal men took the end of this wire and ran, turning the valvo quickly, nnd the great fire was out. The great difficulty now will bo to build a derrick over tho well, fish out the dropped tubing and re tube and shut In tho well. After the fire was put out tho gas was turned loose nnd Is now blowing Into the nlr out of the top vent of the hood. MINNEAPOLIS SLAYERS ESCAPE. One of Men Released Was Purchaser of Knives Found.
