TOBACCO FACTORY WRECKED.
Kentucky House Operated for Tobacco
Trust Destroyed by Dynamite.
Elkton, Ky., Dec. 13. Tho tobacco
factory, owned by Mrs. M. 13. I'enyck
and operated for tho tobacco trust,
was blown up by dynamite. There
was no loss of life, but tho damage to
tho factory was complete. There was
no Insiirunco on the plant, as the In
surance company had only a few tlayB
ago cancelled tho policy, owing to
tho excitement occasioned In this lo
cality by the tactics of some of tho
dark tobacco growers. The force of
tho explosion was felt for a long dis
tance. Several houses in the vicinity
wero damaged. Tho deed Is thought
to have been committed by parties
friendly to tho Dark Tobacco (I rowers'
association, hut tho latter has se
verely condemned such action.
Tho conductor of a passenger train
on tho Rlkton and Guthrlo railroad
stated that as his train was making
tho roturn trip from Guthrlo to Elkton
ho was flagged at Urndshaw. When
tho train was stopped the engine was
boarded by masked men, who covered
tho engineer with revolvers and told
him to do their bidding. While this
was going on, about 160 men, all heav
ily maBkcd, boarded tho train, about
forty of them marching from ono end
to the other, with drawn rovolvers.
Tho leader of tho gang told tho pas
scngers not to got excited, as they
wero only looking for tobacco buyers.
After n thorough search of tho train
had been mado all tho men, as far as
tho conductor know, left the coaches
and tho engineer was ordered to pro
ceed. Tho train then moved on to
Elkton.

fice of Receiver Be Abolished.
Washington, Dec. 12. In his nnnual
roport for the fiscal year ended Juno
30, 190C, tho commissioner of the gen
eral land office recommends that tho
office of receiver of public moneys in
tho 107 local land offices he abolished,
as It is deemed unnecessary to have
two officers of co-ordinate jurisdiction
In local land, offices. The proposed
action, It Is stated, would result In an
estimated saving of $250,000 per an
num aud an improvement in the hand
ling of public business in local lund
offices.

the public lands wero disposed or.

penditures and estimated liabilities

In regard to tho alleged unlawful
enclosures of public lands, fraudulent
entries and Illegal cutting of timber
on tho public domain, tho report
shows that during the year nearly
1,000 entries were suspended upon re
ports of special agents, and that 1,500
entries wero cancelled as a result or
these and prior proceedings. Reports
from special agents showed unlawful
enclosures of public lands in more
than 100 Instances, tho area of such
enclosures aggregating 303,377 acres
of public landB. Through tho effortB
of tho land office and special agents,

been removed and proceedings aro
pending to compel tho removal cf
