Easterners Swindled by Meant of
Forged Titles to School Lands.
Portland, Ore., Dec. 4. Only when
all persons holding certificates for
school landB in thi3 stato have their
certificates sent to Salem to havo
them examined will It bo possible to
mako an estimate of tho gigantic
swindles perpetrated on easterners by
unscrupulous land operators. Gov
ernor Chamberlain stated to the As
sociated Press that there Is no limit
to tho number of forged checks which
could havo been mado, and it is safe
to say, ho added, that whore tho cer
tificates were hypothecated tho full
amount known by tho certlflcato was
obtained or whore sales were mado
outright the full value of the land as
shown by land cruising was paid by
tho victim.
Very few of tho persons who pos
sess forged certificates are kuown bo
far, but from the fact that persons in
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, New
York, Ohio and Florida aro in posses

pany at Dlamondvllle, Wyo., com

tho colliery and snuffing out tho lives
of nineteen men. It was ton hours
beforo tho rescuers were ablo to pene

to roach tho first man, and not until
11 o'clock wero the fears of tho rela
tives of tho entombed miners con
firmed when tho blackened and
charred remnins of Robert Marshall
wero brought to tho surface. His
body was burned into an unrecognlza
bio mass.
Tho relief party that recovered tho
body was headed by Superintendent
Thomas Sneddon, who was overcome
by tho gases and had to bo carried
from tho mine. Ho Is In a precarious
condition and may not recover. There
tiro eighteen men still In tho mine,
nnd nil hopo that they are alive was
abandoned.
