JAPAN WILL DEMAND INDEMNITY
Feeling That Part of Enormous Ex
pense Should Be Paid by Russia.

at Portsmouth, N. H., next month, la

the Japanese pence delegation, who
arrived here, bb voiced by Altnar Sato,
who Ib the official spokesman for the

an Interview, said:

men has been 670,000, Russia losing
370,000 of these. The war Is costing
Japan $1,000,000 a day, and there Is
a feeling that thero ought to bo an '
indemnity."
Ashed as to tho probability of an
armistice, Mr. Sato said that probably
would be among the first questions
the plenipotentiaries would consider.
The question was put to Mr. Sato
as to any possibility of conflict with
tho United States in tho future, as
suggested by some of the American
press nt tho outbreak of the war, and
Mr. Sato asked what could bring
nbout such a conflict. When It was
suggested that Japan might covet tho
Philippine Islnnds, he laughed heart
ily, and replied that Japan would not
have the Philippines as a gift, even
though a bonus accompanied the gift.
Haron Komura nnd his party arrived
enrly from Ghlongo and proceeded nt
once to the Wahlorf-Astorln, where
they will bo quartered until his de
parture for Portsmouth. Thero wns
no demonstration beyond the presence
of a few Japanese merchants nnd
members of the Nippon club, who
shook hnnds with the members of the
party. When tho party arrived in
New York from New Jersey about 100
Japanese cheered tho baron as he en
tered n carriage and was driven
away. The baton mot his rollenguo
on the commission, Kogoro Takaliirn,
minister at Washington, and they
lunched In tho baron's apartments.
Today Ptesident Roosevelt will bo
oflleinlly notified of Huron Komura's
arrival nnd later In the week the
hnron will make an Informal visit to
Oyster nay.
There Is no stated program mapped
out for the distinguished Japanese
pending the arrival of M. Wllte, who
is expected to arrive next week.

comments of all shades of opinion.
Various conjectures are advanced as
to Its renl meaning, but they nre all
admittedly guess work.
