The best lung fertilizer is Scott's Emulsion. Salt pork is good too, but it is very hard to digest. The time to treat consump tion is when you begin trying to hide it from yourself. Others sec it, you won't. Don't wait until you can't deceive yourself any longer. Begin with the first thought to take Scott's Emulsion. If it isn't really consumption so much the better: vou will soon forget it and be better for the treatment. If it is consump tion you can't expect to be cured at once, but if you will begin in time and will be rigidly regular in your treat ment you will win. Yet somo people declare that Panama has no government or political existence FUtrMMl AM far 6ea Raa. The go'd roads movement is begin ning to assumo definite form. The agi tation has extended from Florida to Maine, from tho Atlantic to tho Pa cific, and people generally aro awaken ing to tho necessity of establishing public highways in a pormanont and substantial manner. Tho time has como when tho pooplo of tho rural districts have a right to domand that thoir roads shall bo kept not only in a passablo condition, but so that heavy loads may bo hauled upon them. Just why they havo been so long neglected it is difficult to say. It is sufficient to say that we faco a condition and not a theory. Tho roads as a goneral thing are in bad conditlou. Iu 1003 tho United States government appropriated $32, 540,108 for river and harbor improve ment, winch goes to the benefit of commerce and largely to help cities It has spent millions upon millions in tho years post for the samo kind of improvement aud not a dollar for the construction of pormauent roads. Many farms aro sold at half their valuo simply becauso the farmor Is nimble to market tho produco ho has ralsod owing to tho bad condition of tho wagon roads. Aftor all It's pretty ulco to watch a woman got her Christmas presents ready und send thorn away. Hint to husband: Tho only way to compliment a womun on her economy, is to pay hor bills wi hout grumbling. Speaking of borrowing, an Atchison woman lends hor neighbors such poor butter that they return it in ten minutes. What has become of tho old fashion ed family that owned a buggy? We are all mixed up with traps, rockaways, landaus and broughams. We don't beliove there is anything more pitiful than the hope of bettor times, better health and improved con dions "when spring comes." If you must go visiting, don't go to Chicago. The people there are so nervous that if anyone steps on a match and it ignites, it causes a panic. A real old fashioned woman lives in Atchison. She recently was asked for her recipe for nut cake, and refused it; the recipe had "been in her family" for years, and they had made it a rule never to part with it. An Atchison man lately whipped his mother in-law, and thoro is talk that he is to be glvon a testimonial. Tho movement should be stopped; Topeka will get hold of the incident, and make another roar about Atchison. The neighbors aro so anxious tQ, do something when thore is a death that if the bereaved family are not also be roft of their senses they can get the whole houso cleaned for nothing, in tho prepara'ion for the funeral. It is a late custom to make the en gagoment short Three weeks is a long enough, aceoadlng to some authori ties There seems to be a disposition to make the agony as short as possible, the same reason prompting a bereft family to shorten the time there is a corpse in the house. An Atchison woman dressed for a dinner recently and wore a dress she had not had on in two years. It re quired tho united efforts of her hus band, two sisters and a servant girl to make tho dross moot before it could bo fastened. But sho wout out to tho dinner and ato a big ouo. Thoro Is a well-nigh universal feel ing that tho pay of rural freo de ivery carriers is insufficient, nnd that con gress should grant about what thoy ask in tho way of additional salary. Thoy rocoivo now WOO a year, out of which thoy must provide and main tain an outfit and keep from two to four horses. Tho men have to be out ovory day in oil kinds of weather. Con sidering tho work, tho expenses in volved and present cost of living, the puy is inadequate The carriers ask that tho pay shall be WOO for tho first year, 8720 tho sec ond and 8850 the third and thereafter. There is some question whether the pay should be thus graded or bo mado the samo figure for all, but thore is no question that it should bo consider ably incroased. It is true that an increase even of 91u0 will add largely to the expense of the service. As thore are now about 20,000 carriers, it will add about 13,000, 000 to the annual cost of the rural branch of tho postal service. It is certain that within a few years the number of carriers will be doubled. If the salary should be incroased $250 a year, it would not bo very long till salary allowance in this branch of the service would be increased 110,000,000 annually. It is well to put the facts plainly. This is exactly what rural delivery means. It is no longer a quostlon whothor wo shall have rural free de livery. That has been decided. No intelligent person dreams that it can bo ropoulod, or stopped where it 19,. or proven ed from expanding. Such being the fact, the sorvlco must be maintained in an equal de gree of efficiency to that of the other branches of the department, and the carriers, upon whom tho burden of the work falls, should be paid propor tionately to the standard of compen sation of the other postal employes. Cfcaith u.SakM. The resignation of Rer. Hauptmann owing to the inadequacy of his stlary to support bla family, the Ineffectual efforts of the Methodists to build a suitable church building in which to bold their services, and the general lack of finaces with which to carry on church work in this city is a sad con trast to the flourishing conditi in of the saloons and gambling houses. , Red Cloud has a population of about ICOO, has throe saloons and two gambl log deni, and there soems to bo little danger of either of thorn suspending business fiom lack of financial support. It is conservatively figured that thero aro ton families in this city supported by tho tralllc in liquor and tho 4,rnke off" from the gambling tables. On tho other hand, thoro aro five roiident ministers of the gospel in this city, four of whoni havo families to support, nnd neither of them has an in como sullicient to provido.in a suitable manner for tho neods of himself and family. And now Rod Cloud is about to lose ono of tho brightest and most popular miuisteis who over occupied a pulpit here, just becauso tho church pooplo aro not as liberal with thoir purses as are tho supporters and adherents of the saloon and ganibliug den. If the churches are to successfully combat the growing evils in this town, the members will have to "dig" down in thoir pockets and bring up somo- thing besides nickels and pennies to- wara the support of the work.
