Now .Schedules Will Ho In KfTcct Decem ber lath Thnt grain rates have been raised 2 cents u. hundred pounds, effective Decomber 15, hus been confirmed In Omaha. Officials of the ralkoads who attended the Chicago trafll, meetlngs at which this was decided last week have returned and have unuounced thnt the reports were correct. .They de nounce the Idea that this Is to bo a hardship to the farmer or that It was done to swell the treasury reports of thn railroads. Two cents a hundred on nil grain shipped out of Nebraska Is tho edict. It Is a winter into and said not to bo ut all likely of permanency, It la fur more costly to ship grain in the. winter than In the summer time; this Is one reason for the raise. Road expenses havo been raised by tho advances in salaries of employes; this is another reason. The maximum charge for shipping wheat from Nebraska to Mississippi points from St. Louis to Dubuque Is 15 cents a bushel. The minimum Is y-10. Nebraska farmers who reallzu the extent of the differential In their favor as compared with Iowa will not think that they are being wronged. Farmers In some parts of Iowa paid only 3 and 4 cents less than those of Nebraska to get their grain to Mis sissippi points. It Is said to be no wonder that many of them nre selling their 170 Und to take that In Nebraska at $30. The ofllclals say that the Interests of the farmers and railroads arc one In common. For that reason there should be no fear that the railroads arc seek ing to wrong them. When grain prices were low and times were hard, they point out, the roads reduced the rates commensumtcly and some of them have not been advanced greatly slnco that time though nearly everything else has gone up. Reports thnt tho raise Is to extend to all articles of shipment are declared false. Kast of the Mississippi, rates In general will be revised, but west of It those on structural iron, steel, barbed wire, nails and some other fifth class commodities, uslde from grain, are to be raised only to the former standard from which they wore lowered by a rate-cutting match between railroads several mouths ngo.
