A WARRIOR BOLD.

A fllAI'TKK 1.
A llattlo of Giants.
vSomu of thu most lrnntli: hovered
ti ilio windows, as though ready to
plunge through space It the worst
came.
They were crned for the time bo
liiK and could not be blamed.
Many a precious life went out that
fatal day, that might have been saved
by the exercise of a little Judgment
and coolness; for of all the attributes
which mortal man Inherits or ac
quires these prove the richest legacy
In such a time of actual panic.
Having taken his bearings, and
discovered which way the numbers
ran, Charlie started upon what he bo
llAed was the last leg of his course.
Now he must speedily realize the
worst; If he came upon Arllne's rooms
and found them empty, he would
know she- was somewhero about the
Intrlcato passages, lost and facing
death, as when ho first found her.
What a travesty of fate such a
thing would be.
Tragedies were being enacted with
in those walls, that had many times
echoed with the scunds of gnyety,
and now rang with shrieks; already
Ilio greedy lire fiend had cut off many
trom escapo, and yearned to encom
pass their destruction.
Somo doors wcro closed, but the
majority stood gaping wide open,
whenco tho terrified occupants had
fled Just as they were.
In passing ono of these Charlie had
a glimpse of n lady, richly attired,
bending over an open trunk, evidently
seeking to lay hold of her precious
jowel boxes ero flying.
Mayhap they cost her what all tho
Jewels from Cleopatra's day to this
ojtld not replace life.
Once a woman had seized upon him
crazed by fear, she clutched him as
a drowning man might a straw.
Charllo could not havo his mission
Jeopardized by bucIi detention ho
was compelled to break away, shout
ing at tho same time for her to go to
tho stairs and descend while tho
chance remained. God only knew
how long this goldeM opportunity
might bo held out to them, for tho
greedy flames were making hideous
headway and presently the entire
building wouh' bo a charnal house.
All obstacjis had thus far been
(iTercomo by its Iron will determin
ed to reach aid savo Arllne, ho had
swept them a.Ido as tho March wind
whirls the dm t out of Its path.
nut tho one was not.
Ono barrier remained.
Charllo sus)ected it not until tho
thing burst u.ou him, sudden and un
expected as lightning from tho clear
Bky overhead
Again a de nlnlng hand.
This tlmo it brought Ills forward
movement to a complete stop, and
ho realized ttcro was something more
serious in tl o detention than when
th'j poor grorellng chambermaid had
clutched his knees.
It was a man; through the haze he
had seen Iil.t presence without pay
ing the leasl attention to lilni, and
now tho fellw, probably as terrified
as tho worn' in, frantically clung to
him.
"To tho stairs or the flro escapo!
let go!" shouted Charllo, and when
tho other laughed with dovlllsh gleo
in his car Stuart turned his head to
seo closo to his own tho face of tho
'(pgus Capt. Brand, transformed by
passion into tho countenanco of a
fiend.
Was It accident or deep design that
brought Macauley to this floor of tho
hotel at such a tragical moment?
When Charllo felt that grip on his
arm and looked Into tho maddened
orbs of tho ogre, ho seemed to realize
that a great crisis in his life had
arrived.
Tho stake was Arllne's love.
This man might bo innocent or
guilty of murderous design, but ap
pearances woro mightily against him.
JIIh manner indicated as plainly as
words: "This far shall you come and
no farther."
Instinct wnrned Charlie to prepare
for tho worst, to throw himself Into a
position that was aggressive even
while defensive.
It was a wlso precaution, for tho
other, oven wbllo ho continued to
glnro malovolently Into his face, sud
denly threw himself upon Stuart.
As he expected, Charllo found Ma
cauley a man gifted with tremendous
muscular power. Like trained nth
lifts, tho two men whirled around,
each Booking tho downfall of the
other.
To Charllo each second meant a
closer approach of doom, while with
tho other tho passage of tlmo brought
savage satisfaction, as his base plans
grow nearer realization.
Charllo retracted a step mustering
every atom of power In his muscular
frnnio for tho storm which ho meant
to spring upon tho already gloating
enemy.
Macauloy was drunk with tho sun
cess that had seemed to bo already
within his grasp.
Ho thus could bo taken off hW
guard, and'pco In retreat, complete
rout imVJ,.ow.
So siijii was tho attack, so over
whelming In its resistless enorgy that
tho ogro fell back In confusion, hard
ly knowing Just how to meat so
Btrnngo a rally.
AAnd Stuart fallowed it up ho know
full well that what was worth doing
at all was worth doing well.
IIo was bout on ending tho Gtrugglo
then and there- in order to do so
most effectively he !?t tn.t still an
other kink, and surprised his enemy
with a succession of tricks that com
pleted his utter demoralization.
It was the work of a gladiator. Char
lie, having stunned the ogre with 11
multiplicity or short-arm blows, hurl
ed him in a shuddering heap aside,
and found himself once moie free to
go forward.
cit.iriT.it xv.
When Charlie Kissed Her.
The Humes had been making hid
eous progress whllo this mad en
counter took place, and already their
ted tongues leaped Into view at tho
further end of the corridor.
Charlie was panting like n hunted
stag, hardly able to catch his breath
In that Binoko-burdoned atmosphere
yet, no Hooner had he hurled his en
emy to the ltoor, and found tho coast
clear, than he started along the hall
way. Tho numbers on the doors now
stood out plainly enough, thanks 10
the illumination afforded by tho
llames, and ho knew ho was close to
where Arllne might be found.
He saw the door was closed.
It gave him n Hhock then sho had
not escaped with the first she must
stilt bo within her room.
He lKiunced upon the knob nnd
turned it.
Horrors! There was no response
tho door utterly refused to give
way, being locked within.
Charlie pounded with his fist upon
tho panel.
"Open tho door, Arllne! Open, for
God's sake! The hotel is on lire!"
Apparently ho shouted loud enough
to arouse tho dead, yet no answer
came from beyond.
Stuart knew of but one resourc
left It wns a desperate case, and re
quired a desperate remedy.
He raised his foot.
Ono mighty blow shivered tho lock
as completely as though a battering
ram had been brought to bear against
It.
Tho door flew open
Nothing barred his progress now,
and with a bound the Hilton was In
tho room.
Arllne lay upon a Turkish loungo
the crash of tho door had done what
all elso had failed to accomplish, for
she had Just raised her head and was
staring at him with eyes dilating in
horror as they discovered the whirl
ing clouds of smoke that curled in
after him.
Chnrlio ran to assist tho girl to
her feet, at tho same time calling:
"Tho hotel is on fire, but be brave,
and I will savo you, If io8slble!"
His manner calmed her more than
all else.
She looked Into his face, and al
though her voice trembled, she kept
a brave front ns she said:
"I trust you with my life, Chnrlio'.
Tell mo what to do, and God help us
both!"
Hrnvo llttlo woman! That was what
ho thought her then and there ho
had believed It on that former oc
casion, when Bho wandered in tho
dark Stecn dungeons and passages,
and now it was made doubly sure.
It would have been worth something
to Stuart at this critical Juncture,
could ho havo becomo possessed of tho
valuable Information which tho fallen
ogro had held regarding the ways and
means of reaching a fire escapo.
As it was, ho found himself cast
upon his own resources and compelled
to make a virtue of necessity.
Ono thing was absolutely certain
ho could not count on assistance, nnd
If they escaped It must bo through his
persistent and determined work.
Then, again, ho kept beforo his
mind tho fact that escapo must bo
downward that flight to tho roof
would only render their Immolation
tho more certain.
Each story they could descend
would take thorn nearor tho Btreot
and increase their chances of being
assisted through tho medium of tho
flro ladders.
Charl'f had taken his bearings
ho knew the flro had not as yet spread
over tho cntlro building, though tho
smoke must havo dono so oro now.
Tho stairs ho had ascended were
still free from flames, though this
could not long be Bald, as they were
In jeopardy.
Snntchlng up a cloak which ha
found, ho pressed It about Arllno.
Somo crnzo must havo been running
riot In his reins at the tlmo, for as
her sweet fnco came closo to his own
ho deliberately kissed her; nor did
she by look or word protest thoro
was somothlng almost holy in tho act
It was as though tho man wished
her to know tho great lovo that was
In his heart beforo they faced tho
dreadful ordeal which might be tholr
destruction. As though ho might thus
seal his claim upon tho woman ho
adored, even though together they
wero doomed to Journey toward an
other world.
"Come! Have courage, my darling,"
he Bald.
Probably fow men on earth havo
been given so strango an opportunity
to declaro their lovo, and under such
conditions who could envy Chnrlio
Stuart tho brief spasm of delight
which ho experienced, for tho first
tlmo ho passed his arm about Arllno'a
waist with a senso of proprietorship.
Lovo Is a strong factor in tho race
tho girl might havo been rendered
frantic with fear had sho found her
self alone fnco to face with tho
threatening destruction, but with his
strong urm to lean upon, and tho
knowlcdgo of his declared passion 10
sustain her, she could meet tho dread
Issuo with courago.
And It required all tho nervo nho
possessed to keep from screaming
when onco in the hall sho saw tho
avalanche of roaring lire at the farth
er end.
Chut Ho led her directly toward It,
yet she trusted him Implicitly- -It was
ti glorious symbol of the power he
wns to exercise In all time to come.
It so bo they escaped with their lives.
The stairs at last
Another minute and It might have,
been too huzardous to attempt n de
scent but that smnll space of tlmo
hns won kingdoms ere now.
Down one flight that much wns
saved them nt any rate, even should
the worst Happen,
When they stinted upon the second
descent, It was like running tho
gauntlet; fingers of llro stretched out
yearningly toward them, and one oven
came so closo that Arllne Involuntar
ily uttered a scream, thinking Char
lie, who had thrust his body on that
Bide, wns doomed.
This nnrrow escape told him that
It would be utterly Impossible to mnke
any further use of the stairway In
advancing their cause, since below It
was wreathed in llames.
Their only course wns to retreat
from tho flro ns far ns possible, and
there await rescue or provldo for it
through their own Ingenuity.
Still they heard tho Hhrleks of fenr
distracted women, cowering In cor
ners or rushing wildly through tho
corridors calling for tho help that
could never reach them.
Such n scene of horror must hnunt
one while life lasts, so fraught with
human suffering nnd the utter Ina
bility to render aid.
He hnd not calculated wrongly;
while the smoke remained more dense
thnn ever, the danger of Immediate
fire was not so great, although ho saw
It pushing toward them from three
separate and distinct quarters, as
though closing in upon its victims.
An open window nt the end of the
hall was Charlie's objective point.
He had hopes of discovering there
the Iron ladder that would enable
those who had the nerve to grasp Its
rounds to drop to snfety below.
Alas! disappointment awaited him,
keen and cutting, since there was no
such avenue of escapo provided In
this quarter.
It wns a dizzy distance down to tho
street, and only a maddened brain
could conceive the Idea of leaping out
Into space.
Charlie leaned ut to survey the
situation.
Immediately a rear of warning aroso
from thousnnds of throats below,
while arms waved him back, doubtless
under tho belief that ,he meant to
take the mnd plunge.
He wns not quite reduced to such
an Insane policy his resources had
not yet been exhnusted.
Charllo had his bearings now ho
remembered the lay of tho land
surely there must be n better chance
of escapo In tho rear.
Turning Into nnother corrldor.whlch
led In the desired quarter, he pushed
on. Arllne clung to his arm with
whitened face and eyes that reflected
the horror of her soul, but, thank
Heaven! ns yet her steps did not fal
ter, nor did sho give any slgna of
collapse, while his great courago re
mained to buoy her soul up.
The Bltuntlon grew more intense
with every pnsslng Becond, and Char
llo knew all too well that unlesB for
tune speedily gave them an opening
it would bo too late, since tho flro was
now sweeping with remorseless fury
over tho mnin portion of tho doomed
structure.
Charlie Stuart knew ho had to flolvo
tho proble mof his existence, as well
as that of tho gentlo being who clung
so eager fc.- to his arm.
No man wbb over better equipped
for tho fray.
He had everything to urge him on
to superhuman efforts abounding
life, with all that means to a healthy
young man, nnd, besides, tho knowl
cdgo that ho was beloved by tho girl
to whom his heart had gone out.
Yes, if ever a man had reason to
strlvo with might and main for vic
tory, It was ClmrUo Stuart,
Manfully he met tho requisition.
