In entering Nagasaki harbor from tho Japan sea the first nttiactlve object that catches the eye Is the famous Pa penberg Island at the mouth of the channel. It Is COO feet high, and Is cov ered with thick foliage, except at the clllf, the face of which U of ragged rock falling sheer to sea. THE ASS SS1NATI0N OF ALEXANDER 111. OF RUSSIA, MARCH 111, 1881. France was stubbed at Lyons on June 21, 1801; Canovas del Castillo, prime minister of Spain and virtually ruler of the country while ho was In ofllce, was 9hot and killed nt Snntn Agueda on Aug. 8, 1807. All threo assassinations were the work of men who loudly pro claimed themselves nnurchlsts nnd their deeds tho result of their convic tions, and the assahslns were all three Italians, a circumstance which Imme diately after tho three assassinations caused a fuiore against thnt race In tho countries which had suffered. The final and successful attempt of nihilism on the life of Alexander III. of Russia occur ted on March 13, 1881. Two bombs were thrown nt tho Im perlul carriage, the llrst by Rysakoff, tho second and fntnl one by Grenevlt sky. Tho emporor wus out to view the parado of the Marine corps. Tho event had been planned far In advance and nihilism had plenty of time to arrange what was to bo n grand movement to end tho czar's life. Mines were laid In streets through which tho carrlago might pass nnd adherents liberally sup plied with hand bombs to throw In case tho mines failed. As the carriage approached tho bridge over tho Cath erine cannl Rysakoff pressed forward through some workmen shoveling snow nnd throw tho first bomb. It fell behind tho carrlace, tearing out the back, nnd wounding two cos sacks. Tho emperor stepped out of his carriage, nnd as ho did so the second bomb, thrown by Grcnovltsky, fell and exploded at his feet, breaking both legs and penetrating his nbdomon. The em peror died two houw after tho explo sion of the bomb nt his feet. Frag ments of the bomb killed nnd wounded people In every direction, tho bomb thrower himself being killed. This successful attempt wns tho result of n widespread plot In the Russian branch of nnnrchlstlc Europe. Five of tho conspirators wero hnnged. Tho killing of President Cnrnot of Franco nt Lyons on Juno 21, 1891, nnd tho assassination of Premier Cnnovas ou Aug. 8, 1897, were still fresh In tho memory of Europe when tho third out rage In four years wus committed at Geneva. President Camot's assassin, Santo, rushed upon the president's car riage and plunged n poulard Into tho body of his victim, for which ho lost hia head.
