The type of gun has changed also, owing to the use of smokeless powders. A few years ago when the everyday shooter knyw noth ing but black powder as a sporting ex ploshe, the lowest grade Ilclglnn bar rels were good enough .for guns ninde to sell at six dollars, and for ordinary uiuateiir shooting tilled the bill. About the worst that happened In ease of an oerchnrge was that the barrel was bulged at the breech or muzzle, and a badly burst, gun wns the exception. Smokeless powder lias all changed the situation. A comparison of 11 gun of ten years ago and one of to-day will show material ditTerPiiees In the mech anism of the breech, the thickness of the breeeh, mul the construction of the body anil action. All these changes are designed to withstand the greater strain of the ultro of smokeless pow ders. The smokeless powders have also been extensively used In rifles, espe cially those of small caliber. The ex perience In actual game shooting with these arms has been about the same as in war. The bullet perforates without killing. In the Maine woods a flue deer was well within shot of a Xew York man, and It was noticed that the tip of one antler was split In a peculiar fash ion so ns to distinguish the animal, lie tired and apparently hit the deer just back of the think. The bullet went clean through the deer, and away went tlie animal. I liree weeks J til it, in an other camp, the aiiliunl was shot b, an other man and Identilled by the split point and the wound mark which liiul healed. An old-fashioned bullet would have stopped the deer within lltlll yards. In the same camp a deer was secured without a visible wound. It was shot at, threw up Its head and dropped, .lust as the guide reached It, knife In hiuiiV, it rose, but its throat was cut before it escaped. At llrst the Impression was that the knife caused the muscles to re act, but investigation showed that the bullet struck the bnse of the born nnd was deflected, the shock stunning the animal: X. Y. There Is one in Boston who will never tell anyone the time of day; there is ono in Colorado who never lights a cigar in winter because his breath upon tho frosty air gives the same satisfaction, and there is another in I'lllsbury, Wyo., who never has n fire in his house because the smoke might wear the chimney out. But the meali est of all men lives right here in Chi cago. Tho other night ho came along Ran dolph street and stopped at n little sidewalk stand whereon were displayed such trinkets ns collar buttons, shoe luces, combs and pocket mirrors. He took up one of the lutter, and the pro prietor's eyes brightened at the pros pect of a sale. "How much?" asked the meanest man. "Five cents," answered tho propri etor of the stand. The meanest mnn looked the object carefully oxer. "I'll give you three." The other Bhook his head. Tho meanest mnn held out. "Too much," he said. Somehow, between tho two outstretched hands, tho pocket mirror fell and broke into several pieces on the pavement. The meanest man picked up the remnlnn, retaining ono fragment of the glass. The propri etor lamented. The meanest mnn passed on up the street. At the corner he stopped, nnd, holding the little piece of mirror before him, ran u small comb through his whiskers. "A man doesn't need a whole pocket glass for a small beard," he muttered. Chicago Inter Ocean. DREAMERS. "There's nothing half so sweet in life 11s love's young dream." The old song is right. Lovers arc dreamers. They create a special world in which they live immune from the hurts nnd ills which vex common humanity. In their esti mate ot Mouscliolu expenses there's no place for a doctor. Our first census, made in 1703, showed the population of the United States to be 5,000,000, and the count cost Uncle Sam, who was comparatively poor then, one cent for nch person. It Is esti mated that the twelfth census, to be made In June, 1000, will show that our people number 75,000,000, nnd that tho Item of clerk hire, In the census bureau alone, will exceed $5,000,000. Although the work of enumeration will be com pleted by the 1st of .luly, it will prob ably be two or even three months later before the last of the schedules are received nt the census ofllce; for not only must they nil be examined by'tliu supervisors, but in many cones they will probnbly require revision because of some error or informality. The actunl counting of the people will not be done until the schedules are turned into the census ofllce. The enumerators simply gather the facts, and the office force In Washington does the counting and' Hie compiling, which is done by electricity. In 100 days nil the facts relating to 75, 000,000 people will be tabulated. Clif ford1 Howard, In Ladies' Home Journal. Gambling l Prance.
