Hryan attended tho MeKlnley reception nt Ualesbtirg, IlliuoU, and it was so far superior to anything ho had seen in tho reception lino for some time that ho has beon sick ever since. Tho only objection so far hoard against 0. D. Hobinsoti for county treasurer is that ho nukes somo pooplo pay their taxes, If uuch is tho cuse would hu not bo a good man to keep in that office, - M. II. Reese, tho republican nominee for supremo judge, Is not mil speaking at every little towu and linmlot iu the 44 statu trying to explain n defective past record, He has no record that needs explaining, nor is ho a politician and oliionlc olllce seeker. Ilu was notul tinted by tho Mate convention byaccla illation before tho first ballot bad been counted, nun also before it was known whether he wottltl accept tho nomina tion or not, Wo have seen preachers who were willing to saro "sinners" unu at a tlmo but there tiro somo who aro willing to undertake to save tho uhole populist tlekot front the inevitable chaos that nivalis them. Will somo ono kindly explain to tit the exact meaning of tho woitl "reform" as used in connection with the fusion licketin this county? Owing to tho make-up of the ticket we nro all at sen on the meaning of iho word. Wo believe that a man for supreme judge should not bo a chronic olllce pecker with an unexplainnble past rec ord, and wo believe Slippery Si will find that'.a majo'ity of tie pooplo of the state are of this same opinion. V Ono of the candidates has already counted tho votes so to speak anil lias found himself elected by a majority of ninety-nine. He would hnvo prob ably made it an even hundred but you know theto is luck in odd numbers. It will now bo in order for two con gregations to arise ami sing Thcro wero ninety and nlno that safely lay, In tho shelter of the fold, lint the preacher bad strayed to tho hills away To Dght the curst of gold. The district court mot Inst week and as a conscqttonco thero was another claim before tho county commissioners "for nsslsting county attorney." Ho v ever these bills don't conio in very of ten, only onco after each session of the court. liryan has at last given tho reason why ho was not elected president. At tho dollnr-n-plnui dinner in Texas last weok hu let tho ont out of the bug. "Votes cast for him wero counted for McKlnloy, ami votes that worn not cast at all wero counted for McKinloy." m Uov. Hiusong and Rev. Kdson -vlll devoto their efforts to "reformation" for tho next few weeks, and will con duct a series of "political revival ser vices" at tho various school houses iu tho county in tho interests of tho "demo-pop denomination." They will no doubt have largo "congregations" nml bo tho means of causing many to seo the error of "their" ivajs. Speaking of trusts whnt'a thn matter with tho trust that tho two preacher candidates are trying to form. O.io wants to bo county judge during tho week and preach on Sunday and tho other wants to bo coun,ty suporinten tendotitaud preach on Sunday, This comes tho nearest to beluga monopoly for tho purpose of obtaining adoublo salary that wo know of. Wo belie vo tho voters will keep them on tho old salary. 9 If ono of tho political parties should happen to do such a thing as nominate a Catholic priest for tho ofllccs of county judgo or county t uporiutendent of schools, how bad do you think tho pooplo would turn him down on tho prutonso that they didn't want religion mixed with justice or tho schools? Still, in this glorious United States one church is just as good as another and a preachor is no better than e Catholic priest when it comes to such matters. Mrs, Helen tiougar, sho who a few years ago klokod up such a row about "nun power" being tho cause of all our troubles, and who stumped tho United States for tho prohibition party ami Nebraska for Ada M. Dittetiboudcr for governor, and she who also so warmly advocated women's fights, has nt last found another cause which sho thinks deserving of her efforts at speech making, and has taken up tho anti-expansion question. Helen will appear in tills city in tier new role in tho near future, ami will no doubt provo as great an attraction as was Cleopatra at tho court of Anthony. - If atiyono tolls you thoro is a deal on for tho republicans to support the fu sion nominees for clerk and sheriff, and tho fusiouists in lettirti to support the republican candidates for treasurer aud superintendent, just let it go in one ear aud out of the other. We have heard that such a deal was fixed up between somo ropublicans uo,we can't call them republicans who would fix up such a ileal, wo moan somo political gllllnlppers aud two populists, but that is as far as tho doal goes. This is a republican year and tho republicans need do no trading; all that is tieces saryls to support tho ticket and it will bo elected in itsentirety. We aro will lug to admi, however, that such a dual would bo very adva ttageous to tho Unionists and would in all proba bility save to them two of tho princi pal county offices. Tho campaign liar is making his usual yearly rounds. Ono of his "fibs" is that the republican candidate for county clerk is tinablo to write and is not competent to lilt the olllce. If Clarenco Reed, iu tb judgment of a republican convention composed of dt-legnlcs who have known him for several years, lias tho ability to attend to tho duties of county clerk, wo see no reason why the republican voters should not sup pott him. In our opinion the judg ment of the republican convention is far superior to that of the political shysters aud blatheiskites. Consistency. We find ono party in politics which is ever readj to liud fault with the other pintles ubniit not being consistent; and also to cry agaiust every candidate placed iu the tield by theopposing par ties. Such is the populist patty of svausas ami iMeurasKti, aoove all politi cal parties iu any state in the union, or wo might say, iu tho known world. They ate always prepared to give ad vice us to how the country should bo governed, what wars we should eugtigo in, wiiun io ugiu, unu men wutu terri tory to accept. They aro never pre pared to fight for the country except with their mouths. If a place or rank be given them iu tho volunteers they accept it until they have to leave the United Slates, then it is all wrong to tight and they resign immediately aud withdraw from nctivu service, but so lout: as thev can draw their salarli-s from Uncle Sam and lie around camp, tho war is righteous, justifiable ami glorious. Such we find to be the ettso in tho affairs of the United States to day. Still more tuaiked Is the actions of this same party when it comes dowu to local affaua. On tho republican ticket iu Webster county wo find tho name of a young man who gave himself to his country's call and when ordeis came to cross .o Cuba obeyed willingly. He wan foolish utiotigb to be bu the tut get tor tho Mauser bullets which destroyed the right arm, wounded also in the body, aud left a vreck of fut mor self and now asks tho county to give him an olllce so that he may earn Miniothiug to supple ment the pension which our uoblo country has seen lit t . award him.
