Description
f0 For burning Straw, Hay, Corn, Cobs, Corn Stalks, Etc.
Hf HOW IT OPERATES.
f? First. It is a scientific fact that seventy-five percent of the fuel burned in
jtg the ordinary way is lost. Nearly all of this loss is averted by feeding the fuel
0Q from an air-tight magazine, charing the same and consuming the smoke, there-
fo?S by making complete combustion.
d$?2 Second. By the use of the down draft, it heats the lower portion of the
8e
room first, making an evci temperature throughout, and
kz
ui
ing the necessity of making such intense fires in cold weather.
Third. By giving double the heating surface.
Fourth. By a skilled arrangement of drafts, the fire is at all times under
perfect control, and can be kept for many hours with one filling.
Fifth. Ten pounds of straw, weeds or trash, or twenty pounds of cobs, will
burn from three to six hours, with sufficient heat for cooking, or for heating the
rooms.
It can be readilv seen that the farmer saves his entire fuel bill by the use of

Further than this, it makes a new home industry, instead of sending millions
of money to the coal combines, the heretofore waste products of the farm are
utilized to supply the need.

WASHINGTON NOTES.
Senator Wolcott's trip to Europe in
interests of international bimetallism
is being discussed with much interest,
both by those who believe international
bimetallism to be a tangible something
which can bo practically worked and
by those who believe it to be what ex
Senator Ingalls would call an "irides
cent dream." While Sonator Wolcott
curries no ofliuin! credentials, it is be
lieved that he goes practically at the
request of president-elect McKinley
and of the caucus committee charged
with the preparation of legislation in
the interest of international bimetall
ism, of which he is chairman, and It is
kaown that ho goes at the request of
the Bimetallic League. These facts
aro net likely to be overlooked by
European statesmen whom lie meets.
There are several reasons why Sena
tor Welcott will roceive a cordial wel
come in England, net the loaat of
which is the speech ho niado on the
Venezuelan question at the last sosslon
of congress, which was reprintea or
favorably commented upon by every
paper of prominence in Great Britain.
Most of the ultra-gold men agreo with
the ultra-silver men, that Senator Wol
cott's errand will bo fruitless, but
there nro a number of conservatives
who are firmly of tho opinion that
international bimetallism can and will
bo urougnt about, auu some 01 menu,
like Sonator Chandler, expross the
opinion that England can even bo per-
1 suaded to take the iulatory steps towaid
that ond. No time is set fer Senator
Wolcott's return, but it is known that
ho will not come back boforo this ses
sion of congress closes, as it is on the
program for this congress to authorize
the president to appoint delegates to
an intorntttionr.1 mouotary confeiunce.

aspect to Senator Wolcott's trip. In
the opinion ef some of the shrewdest
politicians, the effect of his repot t may
determine tho control of the sonate far
years to como. It is well known in
political circles that it was only the
declaration of the St. Louis platform,
pledging tho republican party te make
an energetio effort to sccute interna
tional bimetallism, that kept eight or
ten senators who aie silver men them
selves, and who represent silver con
stituencies from fvllowiug the example
set by Senator Teller and the other
senators who bolted the St. Louis con
vention. If Senator Wolcott brings
back oven a partially favorable report,
these sonators are expected to bo sat
isfied to remain as they are, but sup
pose ho repoits international bimetall
ism to bo an impossibility under exist
ing circumstances? Then what will
they do? Should they Join the bolters,
the republicans would be in a decided
minority in the senato for a long time.
A number of silver sonators have
agreed that every nomination of a gold
man to succeed a removed silver man
sent to tho senato shall be held up, and
as the republicans have a direct in
terest in seeing this agreement carried
out, it can bo put down as reasonably
certain that a number of men now
drawing ofllclal salaries, by reason of
having been uominated during the
congressional recess, will cease to do
so en the 3rd of March, because of the
failuro of tho sonato to confirm their
nomination,
What congress will do about Ouba is
atill to bo soon, but tho administration
has left nobody iu doubt about its posi
tion. Its latest act was to relnforco

lated to seethe the feeling of (befriends

been of the opiiion that this govern
ment was unnecessarily active in its
efforts to prevent fllllbusteiing; nor is it
calculated to help those who have been
working hard during this recess to
bring the most fiery senators around to
a conservative view of the Cuban ques
tion. On the contrary, it is calculated
to cause peoplo to attach more impor
tance to rumors cabled from Spain
about Prosideut Cleveland having
promised his assistance to Spain, etc.
Of course everybody knows that this
government is bound by international
law to uso all proper precaution to
prevent the departure of tillibustering
expeditious, but many believe that it
has been eutiroly too vlgilent in that
respect.

dispose of the Loud bill depriving
novels and publications other than
regular periodicals and sample copies
of newspapers of tho privilege of being

and will take up the Pacific Railroad

after four days discussion.
A hint has been dropped by a friend
of Senator Sherman which has caused
the belief that ho has been "convinced"
that ho would rather bo secretary of
state under the coming administration
than-to remain in the senate rind be a
candidate for re-election.

The Girtanner Goal Attachment
For Stoves, Furnace and Boilers.
The principles involved in this attachment are very simple. The attach- ?PJ
merit makes the fuel self-feeding and is air-tight. The down draft is also ap- fCfiS
plied, and it burns the smoke and gases before they leave the fire-box. h
Seventy-five per cent of the strength of the fuel ordinarily escapes in the j( ;
smoke. By this method of burning, the tars, pitches and carbons which are con- jg2
tained in the smoke are utilized. It also avoids the gas, smoke and soot which jgf;
is created by the ordinary method of burning coal. $
It gives a larger heating surface and avoids the necessity of making in- g2
tense fires to get the desired temperature. Pj
Physicians recommend the Girtanner Attachments for the general health of $
