A reiniirkable disaster has occurred
in the old ('ermtiii town of Unix, in
northwestern Ilobetnla, In many re
spects recalling the recent disastrous
earthquake which almost entirely de
stroyed the town of I.aibneb, in Ciirni
ola. On Friday evening, writes the
Vienna correspondent of the London
Times, the inhabitants of Ilrux were
alarmed by the sudden extlnguihhlng
of the street lamps, and at first it was
surmised that an accident had occurred
at the gas works. The report, how
ever, spread that a large number of the
houses in the Ilahnhofstrasse were in
imminent danger of collapsing, which
was shortly after conllrmed and: supple
mented liy the news that the "Anne
Shaft," belonging to the Unix Coal
Mining company, in the vicinity of the
town, had been completely Hooded by
an Inrush of sand and water. In con
sequence of the reports the authorities

The horror of the situation was great
l.v increased by the tut.il darkness
which prevailed, together with a lieav.,
downpour of rain. The descriptions of
the scene whicb have reached Vienii"
are lieartreiidiug in the e.treine, the'

in the morning, in view- of the dangeV
which still threatened, the authorities
ordered the clearance, of the houses lr.
that part of the town which has suf
fered most severely. Up to the present
eighteen houses are in ruins and it
is expected that many others will hiive
to be pulled down. The damage is es
timated to exceed l,filK),(MM florins. In
couseipjcnoe of the breaking of tho
main gas and water pipes the towss is
without light and water. The distress
which prevails Is very great. During
the Inst sitting of the reichsrath the
government was culled upon to take
prompt measures to alleviate the ills
tress, and in view of the magnitude of
the disaster to make use of the funds at
its disposal for such purposes to assl.st
the sufferers. The money thus ex
pended by the government will be
voted during the next sessioss.
