A SALLAD OF LIGHT HOUSEKtthNQ.
lb a subtly sweet snscestlve phraoe,
Bat the almplo soul who Is tared thereby
Will make a sorrow for many days.
In secret oft will ha moan and cry
And rotu tho thtnit a tremendous He,
For It means, this plirano that sounds so fair,
A world of trouble mid toll nnd car
And m wild distracting wish to go
Away from It soon and anywhere
I apeak of the things whereof I know.
It means all little transparent ways
To hide away from the common eye
fh fact that your bread and butter atays
In your desk; that you bake and tx U and fry
In a single dUU. It means to try
To hang your garments, tho best you wear,
In a folding bed, that last despair
Of honest souls; and, bitterest blow,
It means a kltcheny parlor air.
I speak of tho,thlngs whereof I know.
It means to shrink 'neath tho stern amaza
Of the lordly butcher's and baker's eye,
Apologising In meek dispraise
For your modest wants. To rare or sigh
Ovsr tho pangs of the bonghton pie.
TIs to pray a strong, hcav'n reaching prayer
For the meal a man pronounces "square,"
And to be onco more In llfo below
Free from that peace destroying enaro.
1 speak of the things whereof I know.
Kitvor.
Ye who have 'tempted this llfo to share,
Pause ere yo enter the tiger's lain
Consider tho truth I fain wonld show.
For with Land on heart I firmly swear
I spsak of tho things whereof I know.
Cnrlotta Perry.
A Mother's Wny.
When the Roy. Hornco Bushnoll was
boy, ho was very desirous of knowing
omethlng about music. No ono in the
family could teach htm, howovcr, and
hie .mother, with Unit dlvino patience
and Insight which belong to mothers In
general, found that if tho lad was to
havo his wish at nil it must bo through
her. Sho obtained a book and soon
taught him all eho knew tho scale, tho
koynote and how to find it, and tho time
of tho notes. u
This was only "book learning," how
ever, and tho question was to adapt it
to the use of tho voice. Little Horace
wanted to sing by noto, and that his
mother could not teach him. She could
ring by ear, however, and tho two hit
upon a species of roverso process. Tho
mother sang familiar tunes, and the boy
watched tho notes, observing how the
intervals and timo ran along, and, as he
expressed it, "soon began almost to sing
with us."
And from singing airs they know Into
notes that boro no meaning they finally
learned to sing uirs thoy did not know
out of similar notation. Tho method
had been unlocked, and further progress
was easy. Tho mother's heart had found
out tho way. Youth's Companion,
A City of Roof Gardens.
The majority of tho houses in Buenos
Ayres havo but ouo story, whoso flat
roof serves nil tho purposes of Yankeo
lawns and door yards. While tho patios
are frequently utilized as dining and sit
ting rooms, it is the universal custom to
promenade in the cool of the day on the
housetops, to sit thero at morning and
evening enjoying tho refreshing breezes,
extensive viows and varied panorama in
the street below. The children find
their favorite playground on the roof.
Thero the nurses bring their infant
charges, tho seamstress her sowing and
the maid her mistress' bedraggled finery
to put in order again. The clothes ore
dried and aired and ironed atop, and
during tho "heatod term" of this dew
less latitudo thousands bring up their
beds and sleep with starry sky for a
counterpane. Philadelphia Record,
Too Sweeping.
After his return from his first lectur
ing tour in this country, the lato Mat
thew Arnold visited old Mrs. Proctor,
the widow of tho poet, "Barry Corn
wall," nnd mother of Adelaide Proctor.
Mrs. Proctor, who was then 80 years
old, in giving Mr. Arnold a cup of tea
asked him:
"And what did they say about you in
America?"
"Well," replied the literary autocrat,
"thoy said I was conceited, and they add-
cu mac my ciotues cua not tit mo."
"Well, now," retorted tho old lady,
"I think they were mistaken about tho
clothes." Now York Mail and Express.
Chattel Mortgages,
A man who gives a chattel mortgago
should always examino it carefully to
make euro it is not "on demand." Sharp
money lenders who loan funds on chat
tel mortgages often try to have this
clause inserted, aud when it is the bor
rower may expect to part with Ids chat
tels at almost any moment. It is a trick
by which advontago is often taken of
the unwary. St. Louis Globo-Detnocrat.
