In tho United States there is no
ocntraliicd control over public educa

Kach state, city or educational body
grants its own diplomas, and in some
cases, (thoogh nut all) furnishes a
normal school for tho training of
touchers. Suoh special training, how
over, is not generally regarded as in
disponsablo. Tho lack of a complcto normal sys

Most of our present mothods and

tho rango of available knowlodgo was
narrower, and when tho duties and
responsibilities of life wcro less com

Land cxporionco we havo gained, this
ago has now to inquire: What kind
of knowledge is best worth having,
nnd what sort of formative and moral
diseiplino is best fitted to equip a
man for tho duties of oitizopship, fur
tho work of aetivo life and the enjoy
ment of an intelligent homo? What
larger share, if any, of tho timo and
tfforts of teachers, should bo given to
tho training of the hand and of tho
senses, as distinguished from tho ao-'
quihition of tho sort of knowledge
and of motal cultivation which are

and hotter moans of comunicating
knowledge, and of making it more at

Heading Circles, agree upon date and

and as our meetings aro what we
make them, to havo an interesting
meeting we must all be interested.
And all live teaehers should attead
the meetings, and tako part in the
disoussions. In connection with the

more intelligent class of people have
already awakened to the faot that if
ttoy wish thoir cbildron to obtain an
education, tbey must lend a helping

We should not fail to notioe tha
importanco of self-cultivation. It is
true, this duty is required of all par

from the simple faot thai tha nature of
his employment demands it. Teaob

discussions of principles and methods
aro excellent places for self-cultivation.
In order to interest tho chil

it is, that ho should store his mind
with choice thoughts of the wise, and
inspire them with a thirst for knowl

the pupil follow tho footsteps of his

is that he scite oyery oportunity of
improving himself and becoming n

Though he seldom recievo his de re

if ho will look on tho bright side of
tho picture, and sco the moral and in
tolootual growth gained from his em
ployment, surely this will afford suffic

Then lot us press forward with the
blessed assursuco that if we do not
receive the rewards justly due us here
we have the bright hopa that the
