Senator Van Wyck, of Nebraska, makes an eloquent appeal to that state to ro-elect him. At this distance Mr. VanWyck looks a good deal like a demagogue and ought to be ejected tc stay at home. Burlington Hawkeye. This is about the way it looks at home, Mr. Hawkoyn. The republican county convention hab been called lor the 18th of Septem ber, to take place at Red Cloud. We hope that the republicans over the county will see to it that full delega tions arc selected from each tewnship. We are informed that a democratic paner will soon be started at Holdrege bv Mr. King, formerly of the Red Cloud Helmet now in the employ of the Omalia Herald. Sentinel. The Chief does not sec what the people of Holdrege have done that their affliction should be so great. Mil A. J. Kenney, well known in this city for the last few years, is a prospective candidate for iloat repre sentative. We believe Mr. Kenney would make a ood representative, aud The Chief would be pleased to 6ee him nominated on the 18th. Good, reliable, energetic men arc what are needed in our legislative halls. Hon. James Laird will in all proba bility be his own secccssor. .Already the "unterrifled" are trying to hatch up fish stories on Jim's integrity but their little boomerangs will fall short of their destination. At any rato no democrat will represent the district for some time to f coiue.) The people have had all the democracy they want for a while. In reference to the would be game of base ball in this city last Friday the Guide Rock Signal has the following: "We have been furnished the score in the game of base ball between the Guide Rack and Red Cloud clubs yes terday, but refuse to publish the tame. The Signal is well prepared to print a delinquent tax list in a creditable man ner, but when figures pile up as they did on the score sheets yesterday we beg. to be excused from reproducing them. More than that, when tallies are run up, balls muffed, etc., after the manner of yesterday, it ceases to be base ball and comes in under tbe head of "ante over" andlnot even the most progressive of sporting papers have yet taken to reporting that venerable game."
