Cheerful conversation insures the easy
digestion of a good breakfa-t. It is a
pifihat in this country the custom of
invhin" friemls to the matutinal meal is
not more prevalent. It may seem a
strange thing to say, but I would ten
;,.,..a Miiur in. out to breakfast than to
dinner. One is. or ought to be, freshest
in the morning: he then needs no arti
ficial stimulus to make him feel bright,
witty, happv, as he too often does after
the duties of the day are over.
The midday meal or luncheon to those
who dine in the evening, and hayo
work to do in the afternoon, siioum ue
a IMit one. I am not quite sure that I
do not approve of the city Snack." It
puts one past, it sustains nature, it
leaves the mind free to think and to do
its duty, and, above all, it enables tnc
stomach to have a rest before the prin
cipal meal of the day.
Now, about this meal: I have to say
that, if partaken of alone by one s self,
it oiHit to be an abstemious one. fcven
in companv it need not be a heavy one.
No matver'how manv courses there are,
there is not the slightest liccc&sity ol
making too free with them.
But it is a fact which everyone must
have felt, that even a moderately heavy
meal is quickly and easily digested if
accompanied with and followed by
wtttv or intellectual and suggestive con
versation. ..
I'm a dvspeptic: I must not dine
out." 1 have" heard a gentleman more
than once remark. m
Well, mv implosion is that it does
dvspentics a groat ileal of good to din
out, if thev can cat in moderation and
iudiciou?h never being tempted to call

An American gentleman, who for

a list inscribed with some of the proud

my countrvman would inform her of
the arrival in Paris of any wealthy
