In China begging is s regular bml
dch, beggaw b:mg born to the profes
sion and bringing up their rhildron to
it. In every large city there U a vast
ascociation of mecdicants, to frfcich ev
eryone who begs for c living mint be
long. A' Vwi head is one called the
Heireai Kin"-. His nnthontv w abso
uy w aoso-
lute and to him the other
ble. The hociety has a cot
and bv this every beggar has
acordinir to custom, to htand at the
door of a dwelling and howl, sing,
knock, or make any other noise he
pleases until the occupant givca him
one cash. Then he is obliged to dcsit,
and can apply at the .samo iflace no
more that tiny. No two are allowed to
beg together at one place, yet thov nro
so numerous that few doors are free
from their clamoring long at a time.
The proprietors of large establishments
who desir to save thorn idvcs the an
noyance of the continual visitations, do
so bv payinr a cirt tin sum at once to
the king, wno causes a written state
ment to th -t eflect to be panted by the
Mde of the door, and thi procures for
that house cei tain exemption. No beg
ger dare approach it. for, t lough f.w of
them can read, they all rccognie the
seal of their chief, and if one transgres
ses he may be beaten by the occupant
of the house, or, being reported to the
king, be more severely punished. Ev
ery beggar has his beat, beyond which
ho dare not go, and has also his supe
rior, to whom every night ho hands
over a certain part of the d ty's pro
reed:?. The overseers in turn pay the
king a fixed snm monthly, which musf
he large as he lives like a nabob. If a
beggar breaks the laws ho is sent to the
king, who is held responsible by the
city magistrates for the good conduct
of all his people. The punishment he
administers is generally too slow for
the people who suffer from the depre
dations of the beggars, and when a
beggar is detected in an offence his
punishment generally consists in hav
ing his hnnds tied behind him. being
drawn up over the limb of the nearest
tree and beaten half to death with
sticks, clubs, h'sts or anything that
comes to hand.

Beeswax nnd salt will make your
rusty Hat irons as clean and smooth as

keep it for that purpose. When the
irons are hot uib them, first with the
wax rag, and then scour thorn with a
paper or cjoth sprinkled with salt.
When soaking alt tUh before cook

tish may be scaled much easier by
dipping into boiling water about a min
ute. For "greasing" the griddle, cut a
white turnip into halves and rub the
griddle witL it. It causes r.. smoke,
smell, taste or adheiion, and is better
than butter or grease.
The vab.o of crushed ice na dress
ing for burns and scalds, first pointed
wit by Sir James Karle, is continued by
Dr. Kichanlaon. T ie ice, after being
reduced bv crushing or scraping, is
mixed witn fresh lard Into a paste,
which is placed in a thiu cambric bag
and laid upon tho burn. This is said
to banish all paiu until tho mixture has
so far meit-J that a fresh dressing is
necessary.
Flowers may be kept very fresh over
night if they are excluded entirely from
