for their constituents. Each gentle-
man has introduced a number of ex-1
celleut bills that, if passed, will be ben
elicial to the state and their respective

of the district will have reason to feel

whatever position they my be found.

school room in Red Cloud, on Satur

On last Thursday L H Rust was very
much surprised when he went home
to dinner, to find his house full of men
women aud chilJrcn from town and
country. 'Hie table was loaded with
good things to eat, and when Mr. R.
grasped the situation he told them he
wished his birthday would come often.
Mrs. Elizabeth Hodgroom, an aunt of
L M aud W M Crabill, of Winchester,
Ya.. was among the guests. Mr Rust
came to this country when it was a
howling wilderness, so to speak, and is
now reaping the lenefit of the bread
cast upon the waters in those early
days, and is one of the leading horti
culturists of the state.
At the last meeting of the county
commissioners it was decided that
material ohould be ordered at once to
this city for the purpose of repairing
the bridge over the Republican, in
case it was needed wheu the ice begins
to run down stream. The commis
sioners propose- to strengthen the
bridge and perhaps will put m an ice
break at no late date. At any rate
they propose to have material on hand
to rebuild should the ice take any
part of the bridge out during the next
few weeks. This was a wise action on
the part of the board.
At the last session of the commis
sioners the board let the county print
ing and stationery to The Chief and
Argiut. Tlii action on the part of the
board was perfectly proper inasmuch
as the work furnished by home offices
is just as good as can be procured in
the state. It is certainly a wrong idea
for the commissioners of any county
to send the work away when the same
can be did in the county. Newspa
pers -build up a town, have all their
interests and the interest and prosper
ity of the county at stake, and in re
turn should be patronized by the peo
ple liberally, and if any one is to make
money out of the county v the horns
papers should have the advantage.
Therefore we commend the action ot
I the commissioners in this-cafe.

is highly commented on by the pros

concise manner and it a credit to Gov.
Dawes, who keep- a watchful eye over
the affaire of Nebra-ka. During the
hist two years the governor has only
pardoi.ed one person out of the peni
tentiary, and commuted two death

ing the course of the menage he rec
commends that the present tax law be
changed so t.at fanners can pay their

Tax Lw. The following item
we clip from an exchango It des
cribes a bill introduced by J L Kaleyt
representative from Webster and
Franklin counties, and shonld Mr. K.
succeed in getting it through the legis
lature he would earn the eternal grati
tude of his constituents. Itsccnn to
be the most sensible bill yet introduced
on the subject for the relief of the peo
ple: Kaley has introduced a bill into
the house to govrrn the collection of
taxes. The bill provides that all taxes
shall become due January Kt and that
tho taxpayer may pay the whole
thereof on that date or at his option,
one half on January 1st and one half
on May 1st, and oilers a premium of
five per cent on the lal installment if
paid on or before January l-t. The
bill further provides that if the firt
half is not paid on January 1st or the
last half 011 May 1st it shall draw ten
per cenL interest. Mr Kaley claims
thst to refund penalties will anise
confusion and dissatisfaction, hence
bis bill allows the law to take its course
on existing penalties. The Chief
lmpei the bill will psM the legislature
without opposition. The present law
is certainly abiu xious to the people.
