- 2 o' n H The Red Cloud Chiefs A.C. HOSMER, Proprietor FRIDAY. JUNF 13, 1884. National Republican Ticket. For President, James (J. Blaine, of Maine. For Vice-President, John A. Logan, of Illinois. enough Jim and Jack are good ns. They will make a team that be hard to beat. for will The next thing in order will be the democratic national convention at Chicago. Our democratic brethren are looking for this event, believing in their souls that Samuel J. Tilden will be the nominee of that convention and the savior of their part'. The indica tions are that S. J. T. will be the nom inee, but we are afraid that the old man's barrel will not be sufficient to get him there this time. - A Powerful Pair. The Republican party has again placed its nominees for president and vice-president before the people. A wiser selection could not have been made by any party. The action of the Chicago convention will certainly have the cfi!ct of harmonizing the fac tions in the party, and bring it again to victory in November. JAMES G. r.LAIXE, the nominee for president, has been a life long and ardent republican, and for many years past has been promi nently before the people in various ca pacities in public life, and has made for himself a great and glorious record. He was born at Indian Hill farm, "Washington county, Pcnn., in 1S30. "His great grandfather, Colonel Ephri am Blaine, was a friend of Washing- ton and had charge of the commissar iat of the revolutionary forces during the terrible winter which thev passed at Valley Forge. At the age of twelve, Blaine was sent to school in Lancaster, Ohio, where he lived in the familv of his relative, Hon. Thomas Ewing, then secretary of the treasury. One year later he entered Washington college, where he graduated at the head of a large class in 1S47. In 1S50 he went to Kentucky sis a teacher in the mili tary academy at Blue Lick Springs. In ISG'i Mr. Blaine wr.3 elected to congress. During his first term he gave himself up to study and observa tion, but in the next congress, the thirty-ninth, lie gained some promi nence, and from that time to the end of his career he occupied a foremost place among the republican leaders. xiunng ttic penou oi soutnern recon struction Blaine made many speeches that attracted much attention and spread his fame as an orator. In the forty-first, forty-second, and forty-third congresses he was elected speaker of the house. In this capacity he showed a ready knowledge of parliamentary usage and a fairness and impartiality in his rulings that won him general praise from both parties. In June 1S7G, Blaine was elected to fill the seat in the senate -vacated by Lot M. Morrill, who had been made secretary of the treasury, and in Jan uary, 1877, he was elected lor the full term, ending March 4th. 1S84. In all his labors, Mr. Blaine has striyen to be with and by the people. Ambitious, it is true, he was; but am bitious to do his country great service and enhance the interests of the mass es. ;His splendid oratory and his matchless magnetism made for him thousands of friends who were ready to go anywhere with him that honor able and brave men might go." JOHN A. LOGAN the soldier and statesman, was wisely selected for the second place on the ticket by the convention. His name will insure the party thousands of votes. Being always true to his friends, a brave and loyalmaj?," the soldiers' fricnd,.i&-niahy other noble attri butes, has endeared him to the people. "When the union flag was assailed by enemies in arms, when the integrity of the union was imperilled by an organ ized treason, when the storm of war threatened the very life of this nation, this gallant son of the Prairie state re signed his seat in the congress of the United States, returned to his home, and was among the first of our citi zens to raise a regiment and march to the front in defense ot his country. Like Douglas, he believed that in time of war, men must be patriots or trait ors, and he threw his mighty influence on the side of the union and Illinois, made a record second to none in ihe history ot the states in the struggle to preserve this government. Among the large number of brave men, of brave soldiers of the late war, whose names arc proudly written on the scroll, of fame, none appear more grandly than the nane of Logan." Such, is the fame of John A. Logan, one of America's greatest statesmen. With these two gallant standard bear ers, the republican party will go to victory in November. The Chief came to us this time on Sunday morning, delayed, we suppose to give us the news from the Chicago convention. The delay and suspense was fully compensated for when we read the resu't. I hoard one h.-'ppy republican saying "roflerblaine." or words to that effect, but I did not know what ,it meant. I suppose he had heard of the nomination and was try ing to make known his approval of the ticket. I am very well suited with the ticket and think it a good one. We had a rain Inst Saturday evening which did some good. Farmers are busy plowing corn. The main attraction here seems to he the lottery of glassware with coffee at Peak it Latta's. The people of Cowles are talking of home celebration on the fourth .of Julv, but some are going to Red Cloud Dr. G.E. Politioal excitement wc have none, expecting an occasional bout between some forlorn "anti-monp" and some one who has more time to discuss the dead issues than any live business man cares to consume. One might just as wclll devote his time and talents to a discussion of the Dred Scott decision and declare it an issue of the day, as to try to talk .sense into a man who does not see that these are prosperous times.
