It did considerahle damage, blowing our P. M's. rooster from his new hoard, and demolishing his windmill. Pat Burns returned Irom Boston with his better half lost week. They have our regards. Alexander, of Chicago, cousin of Mr. Joseph Alexander, of this place, is visiting here. G. R. Chaney, of Ked Cloud, is in town on professional business. One of our merchants, Mr. Peak, re turned from St. Joseph, hist Saturday, where he had been purchasing a stock of dry goods. A prospective wedding is whispered, in Cowles. Our school is flourishing under the care of Miss Parsons. Mr. J. H. Shugart. of Guide Rock, was in our town twice hist week, with parties wanting to buy land. Mr. Henry Waller, aged sixty-four years, and well known as one of the first settlers here, had a narrow escape from sudden death one day last week, being thrown from his wagon. He is subject to slight attacks of apoplexy, and it is supposed that while alone in his wagou had one of these attacks, and that his team ran away for want of driver. He was picked up iincon cious and taken home, where soon re gained conciousiiess, and after seveial hours retatid a little sleep he was ful ly restored, mentally, but complained considerably of several bruises he sus tained, none of which, however, are serious. He was in Cowles a few days afterward. The farmers of this vicinity are talk ing of a cheese factory. Gilford fe Fuller are shipping several car loads ol corn this week. Little Hatchet. WHEATLAND. Your correspondent seems to he Eomcwhat direlect in keeping your readers posied from this corner of the county, l)Ut I suppose it is not so much for want of news as from the rush of farming business that owing to the lateness of the spring came rushing in upon all available help, but the p-os-pect now is an ample return for ail farm labor. The winter term of school closed and the spring term commenced with a full attendance, under the efficient man agement of Miss Lottie Gibson The Sunday school held the annual election for officers the last Sunday in April. Mr. Miller was elected super intendent; A. Scott, assistant; S. Bierer secretary; Miss Etta Scott, treasurer; Miss Blanche Gibson, librarian. The school luis increased to the full seating capacity of the school room. About twenty shares have bem taken in the missionary shiptMorning Star. At the last meeting the school voted a pic-nic in July to be determined hereafter. Will announce the time when known. There will be service next Saturday by Kev. Martinis. Communion ou Sun day. John Barnev has just finished a neat and substantial residence upon his farm. Mr. Patterson has finished his fine mansion and will move in it in a few days. Mr. Bryon C. Burt has rented his farm to Mr. P. Miller, and has gone with his lady to visit his aged parent in Ohio and friends in Wisconsin. Is expected to return some time in June. Mr. Butts is breaking up his farm south of the Blue. La Portville boasts of a physician, recently loccated, from Gaylord, Smith county, Kans., in the person of Mr. L. X. Wells, a gentleman of fine scholas tic attainments and a well read physi cian. Thus is filled a want much felt hi this vicinity. We now need an act lv resident minister. . Much attention is being given to the improvement of our stock of horses. The finest specimen now in this sec lon is C. W. Huberts' Clydesdale. Measles prevail. No fatal cases. Nvm Burns lost a horse from his teain. Wm ELM ('KECK. We have a prosperous Sunday school. It is well attcded. We run the school winter and summer. We believe it is one of the best in the county. In connection with the Sun day school we have Bible reading in the evening, which was very interest ing to both yciing and old. We have the rst Bible class, second Bible class, first and second primary classes. The little learners' class numbers about 40 in all. We h-ive preaching every two weeks. Mr. Esau was too fast in his dream as it appeared in the Elm Creek items. He dreams with his eyes open. Taw. WALNUT CREEK.
