The Red Gloud Chief.
A.C HOBIMERy - - Proprietor
FRIDAY. MAY 9. 1884.
The following extracts from the elo
qunt speech- of Gen. Oglesby, before the
Illinois state convention, are worthy
to be repeated from every stump in
the coming campaign:
"Oh! how we have stood by the na
tional credit; how we have stood by the
national honor; how we have bnilded
up the national gTory ! Gentlemen,
do not talk about the past record 'of the
republican party, the record is not past.
Cries of "No. no," and applause. It
is like the sermon on the mount. It is
like the ten commandments. Are those
now in the pjitt? Applause. The re
cord of the republican party is still !e
ing made. It i3still expanding. How
can a record be past when you are liv
ing upon it? When you are marching
upon it today, when everv -gentleman
in my presence feels in his inmost heart,
when he comes to reHect upon it, that
he is lifted up and dignified by it? There
is no niau who is not proud ofit. It is
not a past record, it is an everlasting
record that will never be past.
"You trust the banner to my keep
ing, according to the usage and cubtonx
of political parties, while it is yet a vic
torious flag. A long line of republican
governers has filled the office of chief
executive of the stite of Illinois. You
then present it to me unsullied by de
feat. Shall I be equal to the duty you
impose and bear it on another victory?
Cries of "Yes." Shall I promise you
here and now that I will do that? "Be
patient, have confidence, faith and hope
while 1 tell that I will land it safely
there. Cheers. 1
"We can never become so perfect
that it will not always be a matter of
local interest as to what our legislation
shall continue to be. In that field I
shall do as I have done heretofore, re
membering that the duties are delegat
ed to three department-;, remembering
that not confusing the boundaries of
executive, judicial and legislative de
partmentd of the state. I shall remem
ber always to consult the legislative de
partment, I shall remember always to
consult the judicial department, and I
shall remember also that it will be very
acceptable and agreeable to the execu
tive department to be consulted by the
other two. Applause and laugnter.l
"The first national republican plat
form was laid deep in the hearts of the
people, as the basis, the foundation up
on which the structure was afterwards
to be erected which those other six na
tional republican platforms exemplify
in this country today. Firm and solid
as the foundation of the Libyian coast
and the grand pyramids of Egypt, built
by the ingenuity and art of man thou
sands and thousands of years ago, those
grand structures, fixed upon a basis
that will never yield, were built to stand
for all time. So republican principles,
as exemplified in the six succeeding
national platforms, were based upon
the first one, as the pyramids in the
Libyan desert were based upon their
impregnable and eternal foundations."
AMERICAN' NEWSPAPERS IX 1884.
From the edition of Messrs. Geo. P.
Rowell & Co's American Newspaper
Directory, now in press, it appears that
the newspapers and periodicals of all
kinds at present issued in the United
States and Canada reach a grand total
of 13,402. This is a net gain of pre
cisely 1,600 during the last twelve
months, and exhibits an increase of
5.618 over the total number published
just ten years since. The increase in
18 1 4 over the total for 1873 was 493.
During the past year the dailies have
iucreaed from 1,138 to 1,254; the week
lies from 9,06:1 1 10,028; and the month
lies from 1,091 to 1,499. The greates
increase is in the Western States. 111
nois; for instance, now shows 1,009 pa
pers in place of last year's total of 904.
while Missouri issues 604 instead of the
523 reported in 1883. Other leading
Western States also exhibit a great per
centage of increase. The total number
of papers in New York State is 1,523
against 1,399 in 18SS. Canada has
shared in the general increase.
