':fJani n mi jfti V- L J ' r- J V s I The Red Gloud Chief. A.C. HOSMER, Proprietor FKIDAY. MAY 2. 1884 iiF.iJE AXI 7HEUF- Ou account of syveic January weath er in the middle of April, I was detain ed at home (Red Cloud) for some days last week. During the first day of this trip, Wednesday, I called on Mr. Ben. Reed, Jr., who lives about ten miles north-west of Bed Cloud, and must say that a more go-ahead young man I have not met in my travels. I had the pleasure ot meeting hia verv pleasant young wife, and fount? their house pleasant and thrilty. Mr. R. owns n quarter section of line land and is fast developing from the virgin soil substantial wealth in the shape ol granaries, grain, cattl. etc., and in the near future n well directed enterprise Mill place I. mi in a coniloi table name dwelling. On Wednesday night I stop ped with Mr. Werner and familv During the evening his son-in-law, Mr. B. Cure, and his verv sociable ladv called on the old folks and as a mat ter of course a pleasant evening was enjoyed by all of us. The farms of Mr. "W. and C. join, and they are both making rapid strides toward that com plete independence and wealth which is the lot of all farmers in Webster county possessing such perseverance and industry. On Ihursday 1 had the pleasure of meeting the Fas'ler Broth ers, eight miles south-west of Blue Hill They are men of means, enterprise, .and industry, owning a fine tract of land and making substantial improve ments in the shape of buildings, etc. Prom here I drive two miles south east and meet Mr. Fish, a verv fine old gentleman and resident of thus county. The only regret he expressed was that he had not been able to attend the re publican county convention, it being the fust he had failed to be present at for the last six years. After a very pleasant farewell with Mr. F. I drove two miles south-west to interview Mr. Boyd, who owns a large farm, with two hundred and forty acres under culti vation. He has good buildings and all the paraphernalia of a good substatial farmer. About the first thing he want ed to know was if I could inform him why he could not obtain hotel accom modations in Red Cloud when ho was detained there over night a short time ago while marketing hogs, and that one hotel man told him he could but would not accommodate him. I simp ly fcive you what Mr. Boyd said, with the remark that said hotel man made a mistake. Wherever I go I find the country commencing to look beauti fully green, and the indications satis factory that the cattle will soon be frolicing on green pastures. Feed, as a general thing, was put up by the farmers last fall in sufficient quantities eo that stork is looking well for this season of the year. The people tell me that the indications for a bounti ful harvest of small grain was never more ilatteiing under the circumstanc es. I arrived in Blue Hill on Thurs day evening, but owing to vour limit concerning space I am unable to tell you what 1 have seen and heard there, but will next week. J. P. Walteks. IXAVALE. "Spring: has come Gentle Annie." As this seems to be the way all vour correspondents begin their communi cations we wiii not be out of stvle. Mr. D. H. MeCrary has returned from his trip to St. Joe whither he has been to buy goods for the new storo. Anthony Arnison has his blacksmith Fjiop nearly completed, and a part of the lumber is on the ground for his new dwelling house, to be erected just east of the post-office Politics are beginning to be quite lively. A few, mostlv old fogies and chronic ollice seekers, are for Blaine, but the majority of the good men are entirety satisfied with the present ad ministration. Time conquers everything. We have at last got the switch where it should have been placed at first, and a new depot is soon to be erected. Mr. O. B. Harvey is putting a new colo- on the cheese factory. It is to be turkey red with a pink ovcrskirt and flounce. The pockets are also to be trimmed with pink. Mr. E.H. Palmer had the pleasure of seeing another of his best cow. knocked oil" the track one dav last week, by No. 7t. Mr. Palmer is'build ingoiie ol the best pastures in the com munity, which will probably serve to keep the engines awav from his cows. There are several old sites for sale just west of us, cheap for cash. One gentleman, who lives in the far eat lias a town site for sale. Another gen tleman, who was once a county officer has an old bridge site for sale. While several others who have had a sfcht of trouble in this matter, will sell out cheap and take a long note on Day men t. r W. J. Vance is for Blaine. Perhaps rf Jimmy is elncted W. J. will get the P. O. at this place. The congregation "" P,ea,rc rise and sing with him, 'This is the way I long have sought.
