ary notice of Webster county, and Red,
Cloud, from the South Bend, (Ind.,)
Tribune, written by Of. R. Chaney, of
this city, formerly of that city. In this
regard, we wouldsay, that if our citizens
would write letters descriptiye of the
count, to their eastern newspapers it
would bo the the means of bringing a
large number of people to Webster
county.
Although my acquaintance among'
the readers of the Tribune is not very'
extensive, a sketch descriptive of the'
country and climate in southern Neb.
raskn, may not be uninteresting.
The general surface of the country
here is undulating, and bedecked with-
beautiful cottages, artificial groves and
cultivated fields and gardens, extend
ing as far as the eye can reach, from
almost any point on the upland. The
Republican river runs from west to east
through the southern tier of counties,
at an average distance of about six miles
from the Kansas line. In thia (Web
ster) county, there are twelve brooks of
living'water running from six to twelve"
miles north into this river, and fourteen
running from about the same distance"
south. Along these streams is more or
less timber, the principal varieties of
which are oak, walnut, ash, hickory,
cotton-wcod, elm antl box-elder. There
has been considerable red cedar, but it
has mostly been cut and u?ed-in fenc
ing. In places the timber is quite plen
ty, and with careful and judicious uso,
will be sufficient for home consumption.
The farmers too are planting largo
quantities, which seem to be doing well.
The varieties which seem to do best are
cotton-wood, elm, box-elder and mul
berry. The Russian mulberry is prob
ably the most profitable tree that can
be cultivated here, as it grows into fuel
as soon as any other, and produces a
most delicious fruit. Fruit trees do"
well here as soon as the ground is tam
ed by cultivation. Those who fail to
raise fruit trees here, fail to properly
till the ground. The climate is mild,
even and dry. This winter h:is been
very mild and pleasant. We have had'
but two bad disagreeable days here this
winter. Our coldest days the mercury
was only 15 below zero, and then not
over two days at any one time. Thero
has been no rain to speak of since No
vember, and but little snow. It rained'
three or four days contiuously just be
fore it froze up, and there has been no
thawing and freezing to make it muddv,
hence the roads have been smooth all
winter. We have had some rain and a
little snow this spring since the ground
began to thaw, and the old settlers say'
the ground' is in the best condition it
has ever been, and the prospects for'
crops the best ever known. In 1870
tins county had a population of 19. It
was organized in 1873, and in 1880 had
a population of 7,104, and it is claimed
that she now has a population of at least
10,000. It is the best watered county
in the state, hence one of the best stock
counties. W.N. Richardson, of this
place, paid the B. & M. R. R. Co., over
$36,000 for freight shipped from this
point in 18S3, besides what he paid for
stock shipped from other points. This
is tne largest ireight bill paid by any
one man in the state for that year. Red
Cloud is the coun'yseat situated near
the Republican river, on the main lino
of the B & M. railroad, 220 miles south
west of Omaha, 280 miles northwest of
Kansas City and 374 miles east of Den
ver. In 1880 Red Cloud had a popula
tion ofOOO, wnile to-day her population
will number 1,800. She is encircled on
the north and east by a stream of living
water largo enough for most purposes,
and which will supply the city with
abundant pure water. She is a divis
ion of the B. Jc AI. railroad, one branch
running direct from Kansas City to'
Denver and the other by way of Oma
ha, Lincoln, Hastings and Red Cloud
to Denver. The B. & M. have their
eating house, round house and repair
shops here, and are taking an active
interest in the growth and prosperity
of our town. The C. B. & Q. of which
the B. & M. is a branch, by the wa-, is
the best railroad west of Chicago, and
affords the best. cheaDest anil Krocf.
transportation to people coming west -They
have just supplanted the Pullman
palace car by what they call the
"1'leaides," which is a much finer and'
more convenient ear, and is run from'
Chicago to Denver. This car, on the5
outside, is very similar to the Pullman -but
on the inside, it is quite different.
Each party can have a seperate com
partment to himself, if he so desires..
Added to the ordinary accommodations
of the Pullman, isthepantrvand lunch'
t-uiuiruiicni, wnicti is under the care
of a porter, whose duty it is to fur
nish such refreshments as the passen
gers may desire. Connected with this
compartment, is an electric bell, simi
lar to the bell system of first-class ho
tels. This arrangement does away with
the regular dining room car, and gives
em-h pas-enger the privilege of orderin
such lunch and at such times as his
appetite may demand, and of eatii-o-tncsamo;
in his own compartment!
