jl lid ! MIlffTTff -"- THE LARGEST The Red Cloud Chief All Are Invited ! Mrs. S. R. McBride, ,1 -- w A.C. HOSMER, - - Proprietor FRIDAY. APRIL r 1884. THE If m j. m ut fci kiJ f I k !1 ! 4 r IS I rt u I r- COWLES. Mr. Editor, you need not be sur prised at the sudden demise of myself and isrotlier "law," as we have oiten, under the dire displejiaure of tiiat lazy man. I will try and keep cool till the Btorm blows over ; if it does, and I remain unhurt you may expect to hear from me again. This part of the county appears to be well adapted to stock raising. Tho first we notice are Messrs. Moore & Gardner, cattle men. They have a fine herd of about 150 head. Mr. Shel don has a fine drove of sheep and cat tlev He says that it pays to handle eheep in this country, and judging from the number that are engaged in it it does pay big. Mr. Charles Husson and also Win. Arnold are engaged extensively in the sheep business. Mr. Wells is in the dairy business ; also, Mr. G. W. Frances, who combines farming, dairying, and hog raising on his farm. It is needless to add that these men are prospering and are well pleased-with Nebraska. Ekami. ELM CREEK. Farmers' have been sowing large erpps of small grain. There will not be many acres of broken ground lay ing idle this season. Wo would advise every farmer to let the prairie grass stay on his farm, and not burn it oil' because it makes a nice fire. We think if the farmers would Btop and consider the benefit there is in letting the grass be, there would not be so much burned. We believe that every foot land that is not under culti vation had a heavy coat of grass lay ing on it, we would not have so much liot wind. We all know that the ground is dry and hot. I proved this when I was a boy, and went in my bare feet, for when I was walking along the road it was so hot it would burn my feet, while on either side in the grass it was cool and nice. One of our neigh bors, the other day put out fire and let it run where it pleased, so it run across his wheat stubble and burnt his straw stack. We don't know how much other damage it did. We have a law against starting fires, and if the law was en forced there would be less accidents with fire. Squire Ward, of Cowles, is putting up office in Cowles. Esaws Dreams. -- HERE AND THERE. My first stop on Wednesday was at Cowles. We found the beautiful em bryo city quiet, with "Boss" Ward holding supreme sway over the des tines ot the future metropolis of Web ster county. Checkers appear to be the only game in which the good peo ple of Cowles are interested. Going north-east three miles we next stop ped at the home of Messrs, l'lUnam & Crosbv, and found good old Mother Crosby enjoying some relief from her old disease, dropsy, having recently submitted to an operation performed by Dr. Smith, of Guide Rock. Every thing abeut this farm bears evidence of the thrift and enterprise for which these gentlemen are known. We here met Miss Putnam, a teacher of twelve years experience, now employed in the Red Cloud schools, enjoying a va cation visiting her brother and si&ters. Thedistrict board of Cowles are anx ious to secure the services of Miss Put nam for the next ten months. Five miles east brought us to the new post office of Berne, where we met thelpost master, Captain Blaine happy and con tented as ever. In this neighborhood we found good old father Orr suffering with a temporary illness, with all his neighbors expressing their hopes that he would speedily recover. During Wednesday night we partook of tho hospitality of David M earns and fam ily. While speaking of this neighbor hood we would say that for good peo ple it excclls an' place we were ever in, and we know this from experience, for we have recently passed some few months of our life there. We next had the pleasure of a little chat with the Emighs. These genial gentlemen are. doing a fine stock business, and their large, well-kept, and commodious buildings remind ns of old homes in the East. James T. Emigh informed us that he was going east soon to im port a herd of 300 blooded cattle. Al though our friend is large and portly, he is a man that walks a mile in eight minutes. He is go-a-head-it-ive, and we are glad to note his success. Mr. Harrison Rimdell, one mile north of Emighs", has recently located and will purely soon succeed in making a fine farm and home, for he is a worker, and withall a genial and pleasant gentle man. We found Mr. Sheldon four miles north of Cowles, very earnestly endeavoring to get his new house com pleted '"to-get a place to store bis fam ily." Mr. Hassan, of the firm of Has san Bros., sheep raisers, north of Cowles, met us with that whole souled countenance for which he is noted. This firm are prosperous and happy of course. Mr. Mallick and Mr. Hiil have recently rented farms near Has san Bros., for a term of five years, and are well pleased with theirlocations and are determined to succeed. Over Friday night we were pleasantly enter tained at the home of Mr. M.E Sharp, who about four months ago bought and moved on to the farm owned by Mr. Reed, Batin, P. O. Mr. S. is a quiet earnest gentleman, and already has one of the very comfortable houses of this county. Your space, I pre sume, will not admit of further notes this week, and I will therefore close by remarking that fin my rambles this week. I everywhere met with expres sions of confidence for the coming 6eajson among the farmers. J. P. WATERS. For Sale. Sheriff Warren has ten or twelve horse and mules which he rriRhRii to disnose of.
