MAKCH 28, 1884. A TTkkei Jte. The members of the Oil Exchange are a rather swell set of young men. but the lead in the matter of clothes i taken br a vouth known as "the dude,". j whose name is withheld for the sake of I his relatives. The dude strolled into the Exchange during a dull hour yester- " dav. and Solomon in all his glorv was never arrayed like one of him. To be gin near the bottom, his feet (thedude's. not Solomon's) were incased in thor fflo35ie?t of patent" leathers: his trousers' ! fitted like the paint on a lamp pest: his i coat had never a crease from Up to top; I 13 linen Was StarcneU nnlU It snonc.amr ' hi collar was perfection itself.and raised I hw cjiin so that hcould only gaze at throau But his tout ensemble, so U speak, was completed and net off by the' darlingest silk hat imaginable with tho broadest and most curling of t brims and a beautifully bulgent top- Altogether he was radiantly, daaalingly beautiful.. The dude stopped near the middle of the floor, struck an attitude much af fected by garden statuary and gazed serenely and pityingly tipo'n his common .. place fellow-brokers. But horror of horrors! A rude man came behind him and jerked the silken tile from his head, antl the next moment it was thrown to, the floor, had received a kick, and a1 dozen brokers were running after it.' I They surrounded it, scuffled for it, and away it sailed again towaru the ceiling with" the entire membership of the Ex change, save only the owner, in wisely pursuit Round and round the floor gamboled the merry brokers with the hat before them. Now it was sufferiag in their midst, then it shot over the floor in desperate efforts to escape, only to bo again overtaken, trampled, Kicked and trodden until it presented .an appfcsT" ance as if it had been laid down' on by a' cow and then snent a summer under a dust heap, and the ay brokers" Were tired out and perspiring. The dude, during this terrible period, stood aghast, and with horror depicted' in every feature, turned in frozen des pair aa the eambols of his wicked as-. sociatesledthemto the four cardinal points of the room's compass. But when' a grinning messenger-boy brought him the battered corpse of his predons dicer, he forced a smile which was only a des- olate mockery of happiness, sad re-' marked: "Aw dawn' t care, anyway. It was an old hawt. Thea the rode man who had torn the rile from the unhappy adolescent's head approached, and handed him the silken bat uninjured, and the dnde learned that be had been the victim of a wicked joke. An old hat had been sub-" stituted on the floor, while the jokef held the. victim's tile behind his back.. And it came to pass that the noise of the unholy lausrmer was so great as to jar the ticker into the waste basket, and the dude will wear a derby bat to-day. and forever after while on the floor of the Exchange. N. Y. Times. Hew Sahara Ears are OMalned. About the 25th of October tho work of stripping is begun and contimied till tho whole number of fish has been attended to. The fish when wanted are takes from the water in a dip net, and their condition readily ascertaiaed by gently pressing the abdomen just back of tho pectorial lin. If the ova are ripe thev will be felt like so many peas beneath; the skin, and a slight" pressnre will cause them to be deposited in a pan placed for that purpose. If the ova are not ripe, or the fish not disposed to yield them, she is returned to the water for a few days longer. After the ova has beem deposited the milt is obtained from the male in the fame manner, and imme diately after falling upon the ova, it diffuses itself among them, causing them to at once individualize and grow harder, till within two hours thev will b as hard as unripe peas and perfect globular in form. At once after this fertilizing pro-" cess the ova are washed several timtw in cold water, and then set away m cold water for a couple of hours, that all im purities may be removed. The number of eggs obtained from each fish varies from two thonsaad to twenty thousand, the latter number having been obtained this season from a forty-four inch sal mon estimated to be a" dozen or more years old, and about as old as any are ' ever obtained for spawnirrg purposes, as' the age of such fish are estimated to be" from four to fourteen years. At the ex piration of the two hours mentioned above the ova are preparad for the' hatching troughs by being placed use' wire screens with meshes about ata eighth of an inch square. These screcaa' are enclosed in frames a foot square, and1 thick enough to allow a half inch of water to flow beneath each one. to assist -whick an eighth of an inch is Temoved'" from the bottom of each of the four" sides for threefourths of their length.
