The Presideaey.
There has been no time for many
years that there has beenjesa agitation
as to the future nominee for the posi
tion of President &, the present. The
nearly equal strenjjtilof the two prom
inent parties compels politicians to act
cautiously, and no boom seems to meet
with any success or much favor. The
people anxiously await developments,
yet a strong feeling is rapidly settling
in favor of Arthur and Lincoln as the
respective candidates and it is a de
structive policy to undertake to over
ride public opinion.
The judicious course pursued by
Arthur since he assumed the responsi
ble position of President, under cir
cumstances of the most discouraging
character the party in fragments
the affairs of government in a tumult
the most important questions affect
ing its stability presented and many
matters to be adjusted, he has restored
it to tranquility, harmonized the party,
strengthened the administration and
country. His course has been remark
ably judicious and displays more ex
ecutive ability than was ever attributed
to him. He has been faithful, honest
and competent. He has given us one
of the very best administrations. He
has aever labored to promote his indi
vidual interests or advancement. Has
appointed persons to office known to
be opposed to him .-Never ( made an
effort to secure the- noniiniUidTfefop
President, and his selection for "the
position will be a free will offering of
the people. Lincoln Netct.
